There are many different activities you could use here, but one good example activity is to provide students with a clue about a staff member. When they guess who the staff member is, they head to that person’s office to collect the next activity—conducting an interview and listening with compassion to the staff member. Action for Happiness - Action for Happiness is a movement of people committed to building a happier society. They also run the International Day of Happiness. But these people need kindness more than anyone! Persistent efforts to be kind to them can gradually convince them that you are a true friend. Furthermore, your kindness can bring about progressive healing for their wounded hearts. How to cultivate kindness

This activity encourages students to be kind to one another and to be on the lookout for positive things to write down and slip into the Thank You Post. 6. Here’s to… Getting involved with a cause that is close to your heart can be hugely beneficial for both the cause and your own sense of well-being. 4,10 Kindness starts with caring—being tenderhearted and compassionate toward others. If God wants us to be kind to animals, how much more to people! (See Proverbs 12:10). This is because teaching children how to be kind to each other and the people around them has been scientifically proven to help their physical, mental and emotional health.

6. People see more acts of kindness at home than anywhere else

The Wildlife and Wetlands Trust - The WWT is an international wildfowl and wetlands conversation charity in the UK. Another method is to use thank-you notes. Acts of kindness challenge Action includes some kind of self-sacrifice and therefore generosity on our part, especially of our time. (That doesn't mean we neglect sufficient rest and whatever is needed to refill our own well.) This reminder can be especially helpful for teenagers, who are likely dealing with more intense and varied emotions than people of other age groups.

The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others. – Albert Schweitzer You cannot do kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late. RALPH WALDO EMERSON The word devotion perhaps comes closest. But the demonstration of this committed love in actions is also included. That's why the word is sometimes appropriately rendered as mercy, as mentioned, and as loving-kindness or just kindness. Guard well within yourself that treasure, kindness. Know how to give without hesitation, how to lose without regret, how to acquire without meanness.” —George Sand The goal is to make them smile. Put a 15-second timer on, and the child scores a point for every smile they get. Games like this teach kids the power of saying something nice. If You’re ‘Something’ and You Know It

How to Teach Kindness to Children

International Voluntary Service - Links volunteers with charities and other organisations that could benefit from their time, skills and experience. Practice the kindergarten basics. Manners, turn-taking, including others, and comforting that friend who fell and scraped their knee. A kind environment is the compound of many small, kind acts. Samaritans - Volunteers are at the heart of Samaritans’ 201 branches across the UK, delivering core services, running branches, fundraising and raising awareness of what they do.

While we know that we don't do things for others for what we can get out of it, we also know that the more we do for others, the more they are likely to do for us. 11 Aside from all of the activities and exercises mentioned already, there are a few other fun exercises that can help your students build empathy. If you reach your hand out to pet a dog, will he wag his tail or bite you? If he has been repeatedly beaten and abused, he may interpret your gesture as a threat and bite. Each family member can get their own bingo sheet filled with kindness ideas. They can cross off the acts as they complete them. The first person to complete the chart gets a prize. Helping others is thought to be one of the ways that people create, maintain, and strengthen their social connections.Challenging your students to a competition can be an effective motivator for increasing kindness. In this challenge, students will recognize when someone does something nice for them unexpectedly and surprise others with random acts of kindness themselves.

Why not further convince your children to add a little extra kindness to their day with some of our other kindness-themed resources? Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive. – Dalai Lama Whatever you decide to do, make sure you have fun with it! We have lots of ways to get involved with the Mental Health Foundation. Not sure where to start? We’ve put together some suggestions to help you out... At home and in your community If you want peace, be calm. If you want love, be loving. If you want kindness, be kind.” – Mary Davis In 1978, drawing on a jarring real-life experience, Naomi Shihab Nye captured this difficult, beautiful, redemptive transmutation of fear into kindness in a poem of uncommon soulfulness and empathic wingspan that has since become a classic — a classic now part of Edward Hirsch’s finely curated anthology 100 Poems to Break Your Heart ( public library); a classic reimagined in a lovely short film by illustrator Ana Pérez López and my friends at the On Being Project:
