About this deal

The Reolink KEEN Ranger PT combines durability and reliability, constructed to withstand outdoor conditions and provide long-lasting performance. It is an ideal solution for those seeking a secure and efficient surveillance camera for their outdoor spaces.

However, trail cams can also be used for simple observation. If you think there might be bears in your woods, how cool would it be to get a picture? It also has a time-lapse mode which is great for capturing changes in the environment over a particular season. But for most people, they simply weren’t practical. They needed to be hardwired, and you needed a dedicated TV and VCR for monitoring and recording. Most importantly, you couldn’t monitor them remotely. At best, you’d come home to a grainy video of your house getting robbed. At night in low light conditions, the Keen, like many other cameras from well-known manufacturers, has problems with moving objects. This presents itself as blurring ("ghosting") and occurs especially when using the IR LEDs. To avoid this, the lightning of the monitored area can be improved by e. g. external spotlights.

Camera Design

The KEEN Ranger PT comes with a solar power, so you can keep the internal battery charged when its mounted in the field. This solar panel has a 4m cable so it can be mounted some distance from the camera, and if there is very poor light in the area the camera can last several weeks on a full charge - though this is variable depending on how active the camera is. You’ll also have to install the Reolink app on your smartphone. Pair your phone with the camera, and you’ll be able to access all the monitoring and control features. The viewing angle of Reolink Go PT Plus is 95° horizontal, 57° vertical, and 115° diagonal. Please make sure that the monitoring area is well within its field of view.

The Reolink Keen is a 2K camera. It records video at a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels (1440p) with a frame rate (FPS) of 15. Note: all photos and videos taken with the Keen are based on the software version as the camera was shipped. During my test, the software was improved several times (including night vision). This same technology can also be applied to trail cameras. You can set up a solar camera and leave it running for months or even years. You don’t have to go out and change batteries, or mess around with expensive hardwired installations. The next feature is the invisible IR-LEDs, which neither humans nor much of the wildlife can detect. I was thus able to see animals moving around my property undetected. This has presented me with fascinating videos and impressions of foxes, martens, hedgehogs and squirrels. Without this camera, I would have been unaware of what was happening on my property at night. In addition, the KEEN Ranger PT trail camera boasts 4MP super HD image quality to capture every detail vividly day and night. I recommend to remove the SIM PIN before use and to read the user manual about the insertion directions of the nano-SIM and the Mirco-SD card. Another feature is supposed to be GPS. However, this feature was not yet implemented in the software due to my early version. I made a test setup to be able to change the location on my large property regularly fast. Normally, the camera should be mounted higher to prevent the reflection of IR light from the ground. In my case, the IR light was regularly reflected from the ground at night, which appeared as a bright area in the close-up range.

The KEEN Ranger PT has a 360° camera that you can control using the free Reolink App. With both pan and tilt functionality you can remotely adjust the camera in response to the environment, ensuring you always get the best view possible. For example, when a person moves straight toward the camera (shown below), the PIR motion sensor will be less sensitive to the movement. The camera is camouflaged to minimise detection and it comes supplied with a strap so you can easily set it up on a tree or post at the desired spot. The camera body is also IP64 rated, meaning it is fully weatherproof. In general, a positive trend can be seen in terms of usage and charging when used with the solar panel. The solar panel is perfectly enough to power the camera and recharge the battery. The camera also supports Reolink’s cloud storage. You can get 1GB of storage for free, and videos will be saved for 7 days before being automatically deleted. You can also sign up for a paid plan to get a higher storage limit. Before the release, I was provided with the new Reolink Keen camera for extensive testing over several weeks. It should be noted that not all networks are supported by the camera. In Germany, only the „D- network“ (Vodafone and Telekom) comes into question.

One of the most interesting aspects of the KEEN Ranger PT is the ability to livestream. This is an often requested feature with wildlife cameras, giving you an immediate view of what is happening in front of your camera 24/7. Providing you have an internet connection, you can access a live stream in seconds (and even pan / tilt the camera view). This is all great news on a trail cam. But what if you want the widest possible field of view? In that case, consider the Reolink Duo. It’s a unique camera with dual 2K lenses that provide ultra-wide video. That said. It requires PoE power, so it’s only suitable for applications where hardwiring is practical. This results in detailed and razor-sharp images at close range. Still images are recorded in analog with the same quality (4 MP, 2560 x 1440 pixels). In my opinion, the Reolink Keen has a clear advantage over other 2K cameras in terms of image quality. One of the main features that meets my high standards is the camouflage pattern, which is just sensationally well done! Although the pattern is actually smoothly applied and also feels like that, it looks like in 3D optics. The design of the camera is based on a tree, which thus also fits absolutely inconspicuously in its attached environment.

Unfortunately, the KEEN Ranger PT uses Micro USB rather that USB Type-C. It’s not that big of deal, but USB-C is always preferred. In our experience, the trigger speeds can vary depending on the size of the animal, and are slower than many high-end trail cameras - though still fast enough to detect reliably. Night recordings are illuminated using no-glow LEDs which are invisible to humans, minimising the risk of detection. It has no-glow LEDs with a flash range of 33ft. Of course, this affected data consumption when watching as well as power consumption, among other things. All the settings are controlled via the free Reolink app. Your nano SIM card will need to have activated before you use it with the camera.
