About this deal

BUT tell me honestly what kind of a life is that? If your spending all living hours in the office, quite frankly life simply isn’t worth living. You could be a very successful business man but if you don’t leave the office then what are you going to of with all the money? Then finally we have the appearance factor. We all know about the peculiar obsession with how much we weigh and look. You know what James is talking about when someone flirts with you, asks you out or even hears a murmur that someone finds you attractive. Then my inner pragmatist pipes up: ‘James, what is the worst that can happen here? Like actually the worst? Let’s say I go over: "Hello, I think you’re really attractive and I would love to take you for a drink. Here’s my number if you’re keen."’ Confidence isn’t just about what you say, it’s about how you say it, your body language, your course of action and how you present or market yourself in every moment. You can’t buy self-belief or top it up overnight. It comes from your identity and how you perceive yourself. Who you know and your social circle can have big impacts on your perception of your self-worth. Some people can rate their status on who they know, who’s important and what influence they have. Some people think the reason for the growing selfie culture is that posting a picture with someone of influence or fame can raise their perceived status. I’ve yet to find a study on celebrity selfies, but people taking pictures of themselves to fulfil basic human needs like popularity and self-expression is a well-researched area, showing that it makes people feel better about themselves.

Having said all of the above, I can appreciate that a qualification may amplify confidence for some. Take this scenario, for instance: when you pass your driving test you're only forty minutes more experienced as a driver, but once you’ve got the nod and you’ve passed, you feel uplifted and more confident – you’re no longer a learner and your status has changed. You hit the road a new person. How can such a small shift in experience and a qualification in itself have such a profound impact? the key to a successful and sustainable calorie deficit is to not cut your calories so drastically that you feel like you’re on a restrictive diet Before qualifying as a personal trainer in 2014, James worked in the corporate world and like many others with an interest in health fitness, he too was confused by all the misinformation that surrounded the fitness world.

Describing himself as ‘that keen guy in the office who had protein powder and useless supplements in his drawer and made sure everyone knew I was off to train legs’, colleagues would often ask James for fitness tips and accompany him to the gym during lunch breaks. Ali, Ghada; Tong, Karen (2023-03-22). "James was the 'fat kid' in school. This led to body image issues and steroid use in his 20s". ABC News . Retrieved 2023-06-15. Ignore Bod Pod, underwater submersion, body scanners and calipers (aka having your fat pinched). What’s wrong with taking a simple photograph? The confirmation bias is a phenomenon whereby people make a decision to confirm their existing idea or belief (and ignore or discredit evidence to the contrary). So if you believe the sea is full of hungry sharks or the skies are full of falling planes, you won’t listen or credit anything. Your mind has already been made up. It takes repetition, too, the more frequently you stretch the fabric, the more you’ll grow. There are no rules as to the elasticity of this fabric. The way it acts is not governed by physics and there’s no fixed amount of strength required to pull on it.

Separating fact from fad – Healthista editor Olivia Hartland-Robbins asks social media sensation James Smith for his no-nonsense fitness facts I gave up dieting – and lost weight’ – the serial dieting neuroscientist who FINALLY lost weight by giving up the fads and eat healthily Scott trained at Fitness First George Street in Sydney with one of my best friends, Diren Kartal, as his coach. ‘Hello, James,’ he’d say in his American accent, having heard me from wherever I was on the floor. Scott was blind but still trained four times a week. (Next time you are a little bit sore and considering skipping the gym, just think of Scott, fully blind and still making more trips to the gym than most of us.) I’ll never forget Scott telling Diren and me his story.

James Smith is the world’s fastest-growing online PT. Honest, unapologetic and outspoken, yet erudite, authentic and endlessly passionate about exposing the toxic myths within diet culture, and committed to helping people to reach their goals and make positive change for good. Not a Diet Book is his first book. Someone with a great work-life balance on an average salary is far wealthier than a stressed, tired and overworked millionaire. Always keep that in mind.” When you get a bit skint you’ll announce to your mates that for the next two weeks you’re not going out because you need to balance your books. Then once you’ve done that you’re up for a night out again – tequila, pizza, kebabs – you know the drill. Interestingly, self-esteem ties closely with our values and is defined as net worth for many people. How much they’re worth is usually based upon their place within a social hierarchy. This is usually fed by income, material possessions and social network.

Lifestyle choices are everywhere and it’s one of the main reasons people are struggling to lose weight. Newsflash, it’s your lifestyle not your genetics. #7 Ignore the body scanners and take progress photos What about Ubers? Even on a night out with my friends who are all pretty active like me, because we’ve got our jeans on and can’t be bothered to walk 300 metres down the road, we end up calling an Uber. Another option that wasn’t always there. James is most definitely not a life coach. The irony of the title is not lost. The writing style is painful, hard to read and full of repetitive phrases. The content too, is just awful, embarrassing almost, it makes me wonder who pushed it to publication. I often use the example of poor Linda from Norwich who’s paying Weight Watchers or Slimming World too much money in the hopes to lose weight, only to be told off for not having her morning s**t because she hasn’t dropped another two pounds. Your past has already happened. Your future is malleable but it’s not in your full control. So what you’re left with is right now. To make judgements based on your past is to make the same mistake as million do each day, falling victim to sunk cost fallacy, remaining invested in the past and not the presence.Think about it this way, if everyone was given one cake to eat in a week (yum) and they can only eat the cake for two of the days then they get half a cake on each day. Whereas if they can eat the cake four times a week, they’re going to get a quarter of the cake each day. But the fact is they still get the whole cake. People often say to me ‘James I am a busy corporate and I can only train once or twice a week’– they are always surprised when I say that it isn’t an issue. Self-esteem is an individual’s subjective evaluation of their own worth. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs about oneself (for example, ‘I am unloved’, ‘I am worthy’) as well as emotional states, such as triumph, despair, pride and shame.

If you ask my mum and dad who don’t have social media, they completely understand how fat loss works. Younger generations though are far more susceptible to believing all the bulls**t that’s out there such as, ‘your not losing weight because you aren’t intermittent fasting’, ‘you need to be in a state of ketosis to lose weight’, ‘your body needs a juice cleanse’– or whatever other nonsense is going around these days.

Confidence is a state of being clear headed either that a hypothesis or prediction is correct or that a chosen course of action is the best or most effective. Confidence comes from a Latin word 'fidere’ which means ‘to trust’; therefore, having self-confidence is having trust in one’s self. Going to the gym to burn calories isn’t necessary, it’s just an added bonus. If you add going to the gym to an already very active lifestyle, that’s the icing on the cake with a cherry on top. If you don’t want to go to the gym then don’t, some people like a plain Victoria sponge cake and that’s absolutely fine. #5 Don’t feel bad if you can only get to the gym once or twice a week But what I didn’t realise, was that the simple reason I wasn’t dropping the pounds was probably because of the ‘Two for Tuesday’s’ Dominos Pizza I was nailing every week and the fact that I was living off sausage rolls from Tesco, basically I was consuming too many calories. Sometimes being too busy is a valid excuse. There is absolutely no point telling people they have to train four times a week when realistically they can only train twice a week. I tried a low-carb diet for a year thinking carbs would kill me. Then I was worried sweeteners could cause cancer so I never consumed any diet drinks.
