Here, we talk through some of the common health problems that can occur when using traditional cleaning products made using synthetic ingredients and high levels of toxic chemicals. Although harder to get hold of in significant quantities and a little more expensive than our other hero products, this is a fantastic ingredient when you need something stronger than lemons or bicarb. As mentioned before, there is no need to keep our homes absolutely spotless. For general cleaning, quite often all you need is a gentle cleaning product containing soap or surfactants, with a bit of help of solvents (e.g. alcohol), acids (e.g. vinegar & lemons) or alkalis (bicarbonate of soda), depending on the stains you are dealing with.

Ask anyone who cleans frequently whether they are concerned about inhaling their cleaning products and the answer will invariably be yes. Who can blame them? Researchers say that the chemicals in household cleaning products can damage your lungs as much as smoking cigarettes when used frequently over time. Whilst this might sound like a terrifying comparison, often these cleaning products contain far too many harsh chemicals that are not necessary for getting the cleaning job done. We believe that using gentle products can be just as effective when used correctly and frequently.Citric acid is one of our hero ingredients for natural cleaning here at Purdy & Figg. It has a long history of being used in natural cleaning -- in fact, citric acid was the Ancient Egyptians' equivalent of Cilit Bang or Cif, but without the harsh chemicals and single-use plastic bottles. In general, there are two ways antibacterial products work: non-specific and specific targeting. Using an alcohol spray is an example of non-specific mode of action, and this does not cause any concerns in terms of bacteria developing resistance. On the other hand, when antibacterial agents target specific bacteria, this bacteria can develop resistance. This resistant bacteria (the 0.1% of bacteria left behind) then knows how to survive our cleaning regime and starts breeding to create superbugs in our homes. The biggest problem is, however, that antimicrobial cleaning products often act in the same way as antibiotics. Once the bacteria develop resistance to a certain biological pathway, it becomes cross-resistant not only to the cleaning product but also to any antibiotic that acts in the same way. If we then get ill because of our homegrown bacteria, the usual antibiotics will not work, as our ‘superbugs’ are now resistant to them. This means we will have to be prescribed stronger antibiotics and/or our illness may last longer and be more dangerous. If using antimicrobial products doesn’t clean our homes, what does?

Citric acid kills bacteria, mold, and mildew. It’s great for general disinfecting and cleaning. Note that it shouldn’t be used as a disinfectant against diseases like Covid-19. Make a paste with washing up liquid and bicarb. Use an old toothbrush to apply, using the bristles to work into nooks and crannies. Leave for half an hour, and then wipe clean. It is widely recognised that chemicals released when using traditional cleaning supplies can contribute to respiratory problems, allergic reactions and headaches, but by using simple, natural ingredients you can be sure that the products you are using to clean your home are totally safe yet still effective.
