Ryan: Let’s dive into some of the topics from the book. Goal-setting is a huge topic. You talk about one of the ways to be a better finisher is to cut [goals] in half. Can you share more about that? Mindset 4: The detrimental power of stress and anxiety can’t be overstated. Even being in a poor mood is dangerous to your productivity and follow-through. Be aware and take proactive measures to modulate your stress levels. Good planning of resources helps you plan out your energy and expectations. You know you have to put in X hours and X work to get the final output, so you’ll manage yourself appropriately to achieve your desired outcome. This lead to a higher project success rate. 4. Quit Being a Perfectionist If your perfectionism is preventing you from getting started, try these two tips: First, break down the task into many little steps, then focus on one part at a time. If you still put it off after breaking it down, then break it down further into mini-pieces. Soon, you’ll be left with such a simple task that you would be wondering what was keeping you from doing this before! Second, give yourself the permission to do a draft version. Meaning, there’s no need to get it done right the first time. Just creating a draft, even if it’s a crappy one, is better than if you don’t do anything at all. Get started and things will roll from there. 5. Commit to it Overthinking is sneaky because it feels like action and it even feels productive. But it’s not. Overthinking is when you fixate and can’t seem to take the first step toward action. Zero in on the details that matter, deliberately ignore everything else, and you’ll feel much more clarity.

The second tip is to give yourself permission to do a draft version. Meaning there’s no need to get it right the first time. Creating a draft, even if it’s not the best one, is better than if you didn’t do anything at all. Get started, and things will roll on from there. 5. Commit to It The best part about the book is the exercises and actions defined in the end of each chapter and in some cases, between the chapters. These are really something which makes you think upon yourself and the way you have been managing things until now. It regularly keeps striking you how we have not given importance to our multiple tasks with equal importance till now. Overall, the book is written with a very good intent where author has gone into as specific as possible that a chapter is completely dedicated for authors on how to complete a book. Personally, I think it depends on the situation. I think whatever effort you’ve put into the task is already a sunk cost, and it shouldn’t factor into your decision of whether to continue doing it or not. The things that should influence your decision are (1) the benefits you will get from completion, and (2) the costs involved to continue on (time, effort, and resources needed). If the goal is really not working out for you, then I recommend you drop it and move on to the next thing. Spending more time on it is just a waste of time. Considering you have no desire to do it anymore, you’re expending a lot of energy to overcome that resistance! Think of it as pushing a car up a hill. For all that energy you spend battling your resistance, you can use it on something else. Our culture glamorizes the start and ignores the finish. We have popular phrases like, “Well begun is half-done,” or “The hardest part of any journey is the first step,” but that’s not even a little true. The first part is never the hardest part—the middle is way harder than the beginning. With nonfiction, you’re trying to find a need, fill the need, and serve people. I felt there was legitimate need around the issue of finishing that made this a really interesting topic to me. We found again and again, having a great team is [crucial to finishing]. When I go to a company, it gives them great comfort knowing this is data-driven. It’s presented in a fun way. There are books that do good data, but they’re boring, and there are books that are exciting, but they have no data. I tried to do one that has you laughing as you read it, but also makes [scientific] sense.

Days With Self Discipline written by Martin Meadows and has been published by Meadows Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-28 with Self-Help categories. The language is pretty easy. You can read along without a lot of breaks and everything has been broken down to the smallest pieces for best level of understanding. The writing style is very to-the-point and doesn’t waver here and there. It genuinely talks about the topic only. The exercises are meant for self-evaluation and makes you think of what you have been doing, what the reasons have been and how you can cure the causes yourself. However, the biggest negative point of the entire book is the repetition of a lot of content and making 5 pointers out of a topic that can be ended in 2 pointers. It’s worth taking a bit of time before jumping into something additional. Careful consideration is key! 4) Choose work that aligns with you Once you start, commit to it. Whatever you have planned, do it. Give yourself the option to exit a project if it’s not in line with your vision (see #9), but otherwise hold yourself to your word.

She has also shared other good practices for better goal achievements. At the end of Cure section, she has given an example and step by step application of points discussion till that point in the book. The last section discusses things to ponder upon. Read the book to know more. Jon: A friend [told me], “What’s the story you want to be able to tell them? Is the story that you played it safe and did the easier thing, or is the story that you took a chance and here’s what you learned?” They’re paying attention more than you know. For me as a parent, one of my goals is I want [my kids] to know the old rules don’t apply anymore. I told my oldest daughter yesterday, I hope that regardless of her future job, she’ll have a side hustle that she’s having fun with, but also making money on. I want my kids to go, “Oh, I don’t have to have a job I don’t like for a period of time. I can do something different and that’s great.” Remembering why you’re pouring your time into this will ultimately be what carries you to the finish line. After getting a series of migraines and having to take time off work to recover, I decided to ditch the evening class. Sometimes we get discouraged by all the things we need to do. It seems like no matter what we do, it’s impossible to finish everything. The amount of work overwhelms us and we stop halfway.

Whether you’re staring at a computer or doing something manual, a break is a great way to recharge and allow you to regain your focus. Now, even if you’re doing work that really aligns with you, you still might have moments where you feel like you’re struggling. Last month I was overseas in Hong Kong for a conference and a business meeting. While I was there, my friends asked me if I wanted to go sightseeing. I rejected the offer because I was working on 30DLBL and I was falling behind my personal timeline. I knew that if I were to go out for the week, the program would never be completed on time, because (a) there was a lot of work to be done, and (b) I had other projects lined up after 30DLBL. I wouldn’t feel happy at all while I was out because I wouldn’t be true to myself. Finishing the program was about my commitment to myself and also to my readers out there who would truly benefit from it. Sightseeing is something I can do at a separate time — it’s not big of a deal. Full Book Name: Finish What You Start: The Art of Following Through, Taking Action, Executing, Self-Discipline

If you can connect with your end vision throughout your journey, you’ll stay inspired to work hard towards your goal. It’s only through answering these questions that you realize what you are neglecting. Anything we want to accomplish has an associated opportunity cost. We must sacrifice, even if we are sacrificing our ability to lie on the couch and watch television. However, [after getting started,] I find my interest waning and the journey getting stretched to no end. This eventually affects the overall outcome. I would really appreciate if you could share your views how one can overcome this habit of procrastination. This is something that I have struggled with and now that I am starting a new chapter in my life, I would want to set this right and begin this journey being the best that I can be.” — S When you’re doing work that aligns with you, you’ll be in your flow and this will naturally mean you finish what you start.

1) Start with a to-do list

Jon: Four years ago, I wrote this book called Start, and over the years people would come up to me and say, “I like your book, [but] I’ve never had a problem starting. Starting is the easiest thing in the world. I never actually finish though. How do I finish?” That was a great question, and I kept realizing in my own life that finishing is the hardest part. It can be said to be composed of four parts: focus, self-discipline, action, and persistence — all equally important. Unfinished tasks are truly an epidemic. I was inspired by reading Jan Yager's How to Finish Everything You Start and I also experienced deep introspection in doing the exercises." (Ajeet Khurana, CEO) There, Jan Yager comes with a book aptly named that - How to Finish Everything You Start. Well, to be frank I am not someone who swear by such books (self-help, self-improvement) and having read only 3 books as far as I can remember, I was a bit apprehensive to read it. But then, the subject itself is so clear and that, made me start it. And well, it has been enriching experience as I finished it (technically, because such books need to be referred again and again). Applying FINISH approach to any stage any project of your life, you can not only finish your task but finish it so effectively, you can further expand your horizons and be ready for more such challenges. This, the author has put in nicely with a good amount of exercises and worksheet thrown in every now and then.

Temptation bundling is an effective method to battle procrastination. It consists of combining your unpleasurable tasks with something pleasurable. Rule 5: Try to look into the future, 10 minutes, hours, and days at a time. Do you like what you see when you consider not following through? Is it worth the benefit to the current self at the expense of the future self? Probably not.
