The traditional constant pumping action required for manual/ non-electrical pumps isn't necessary with the Haakaa although our customers have found a squeeze every now and then can help to produce a letdown. If you have a hand free gently massage your breast or apply a warm compress to improve your milk flow. While a haakaa pump is certainly much more convenient than an electric breast pump, I didn’t find that it was a replacement for my electric pump.
Sometimes, the clog can be released right away, and sometimes you need to do this several times a day to get it work. The amount of milk you collect with a haakaa varies from mom to mom. A lot of it depends on your milk supply, the last time you nursed or pumped, and how your breasts respond to the pump. I would, on average, collect about two ounces per feeding. When I was really struggling with an oversupply, I could get up to eight ounces per feeding, and after my baby started solids, I would sometimes collect less than an ounce. It all depends! Other mums prefer the smaller and slightly lighter 100ml version, so it really comes down to personal preference. You can use the Haakaawithout nursing. You can use it while pumping, or if you’re feeling extremely full, you can use it by itself. I have personally had success using the haakaa on it’s own. I have suffered from an oversupply, and just the thought of my baby can give me a letdown. In fact, the haakaa was vital in helping me manage my oversupply and regulate my milk supply. Don’t be discouraged if using a Haakaawithout nursing doesn’t work for you, as our breasts and milk supplies are all different. What if the Haakaa’s not Working?However, it’s not a breast pump in the way that a manual like the Medela Harmony, or and electric pump like the Spectra S1, are - so we don’t think it’s fair to compare it to these. Traditionally, the haakaa is just used to collect the let down on the side that you are not feeding baby. However, some moms choose to leave it on longer and collect both foremilk and hindmilk. Anything that removes milk from your breasts can increase your milk supply. Breast milk works on a supply and demand system. The more milk you demand, the more milk your body will make. If you want to see an increase in milk supply, use the Haakaaas much as possible (removing milk on a frequent basis).

Once this stage is over your milk may then drip out a little steadier. So the secret is to keep the Haakaa on your breast for at least 15 to 20 minutes to ensure you’re getting a full feed. Does having a Haakaa mean I don’t need an electric pump? Once you have finished pumping for the day, decant the milk into a storage bottle or bag then wash your pump. Most lactation consultants recommend that you refrain from pumping until your milk supply has regulated (around 6 – 8 weeks). The Haakaa can encourage milk removal, but it cannot provide the stimulation needed to drive further milk production in the same way a baby or an electric breast pump can. Read More Squeeze the pump at its widest part (where the milk will be collected) and bring it up to the breast. If that haakaa hurts while it’s attached to your breast, make sure your nipple isn’t touching the silicone. Just remove the pump and reattach, making sure your nipple is fully centered in the middle of the flange. Does the Haakaa Take Milk Away from the Baby? But if you’re using the haakaa for its intended use–strictly as a milk saver– your supply shouldn’t be affected too much. The reason being, when you nurse your baby the letdown reflex (milk ejection reflex) is triggered and milk flows out of your breasts– and not just out of the breast your baby is nursing on, either!
