Many of the inaccuracies in the ExR translation were preserved, such as the translation of 随便 [suíbìan] as “whatever” (I maintain it should be “doesn’t matter,” which would preserve the joke while being more accurate). Translating 無聊 [wúliáo] as “boring” is an unfortunately common mistake (the actual connotation is something closer to “don’t you have anything better to do?”). Then there are situations in which transliteration would be best, but translation is used instead, such as the decision to translate 静室 [jìngshì] as “Tranquility Room” (not really an improvement from ExR’s “Quiet Room”). And translating 清談 [qīngtán] as “symposium” is just egregious. My two cents? It's not worth a 150USD series imho. My personal opinion is that all pre existing fan translations are at least more accurate to the original text (though granted they could be polished up). It’s embarrassing that we’re even considering this because the sole complete translation was written by a 16 year old during her free time. Surely an experienced publisher with a full fledged team could do better than this.

I'm a CN/ENG native bilingual speaker and I've personally read the chinese version 3 times. This is a stand alone review of the official English translation. Unfortunately, this is such a badly written book. MXTX expressed befuddlement at readers' impression of Lan Xichen as someone who is a "calculating, farsighted person deep inside.” She claimed that she had never given him any traits that would make readers interpret him in such a way, adding “to be a clan leader didn't require deep insight and acute perception,” reflecting one of the novel's themes surrounding class-based societies.
