Condon, Dan (13 September 2019). "Why Liquid Skin was Gomez at their best - Music Reads - Double J". ABC.net.au. Archived from the original on 29 July 2021 . Retrieved 30 July 2021. I wasn't interested in the machinations of the music industry at the time. So, I'm unsure if it was the band's unexpected Mercury Prize win the year prior, the airplay it received on triple j, word of mouth, or just a great promo campaign.

NME. 17 May 1999. Archived from the original on 29 July 2021 . Retrieved 29 July 2021. I used to write about music, but I don’t much anymore. I feel like there’s not much point to it. There’s still some utility in making an argument for someone’s time and attention when it comes to a book or a movie or a video game, but why tell someone what records they should listen to when it is utterly frictionless at all times and in all places to summon songs up through one’s devices and listen on their own? Waste of time. You can find Gomez’s Liquid Skin, recently refurbished on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, on Spotify. Seek it out. They could probably use the stats. It may not be appropriate to use "Analytical" for a specific remaster, but it is. whereas the original has all the fun and excitement of Gomez. I'm not saying it's a bad remaster or bad pressing. cos it's good on its own. it's upto you. Gomez - [Bring It On - 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition (Disc 2) 2008] Brother Lead (BBC Radio One Session) (4:38) It was amusing because it wasn’t really felt by us, other than it’s just something that some frustrated musician has written. The whole point was that I was based on their idea of what was cool. The fact that we had been students was supposed to be some kind of problem, but every single band going had been to art college or university or something. Hold on a minute, what is the problem here exactly? Blue Moon Rising' evolves from jazz-soul into something almost resembling Pearl Jam going Latin-country, 'Las Vegas Dealer' delves into odd time signatures while Northern Soul piano blends with ska rhythms. Again, it may have still been the 1990s, but "Britpop" this was certainly not. Topped by some wondrous, sparse touches of cello, 'We Haven't Turned Around' is anthemic balladry done the Gomez way; understated, soulful and with a distinctive hint of earthy funk.

Retrieved 11 August 2020.Ottewell continues: “The Americana thing gave the likes of the NME and Melody Maker a way in to be critical, which was good. It was really good when we won the only award in the NME that was voted by for by their readers. We won, which was funny after they slagged us off for over two years.” On the fringes of America geographically, the Mercury Awards, people were aware of that—in New York, LA, San Francisco. But having something like a song on a major movie like that opened the door to other places in the States that weren’t so aware of British music.” It remains the best song on the album, and perhaps the best song Gomez ever recorded. And that moment, just a handful of seconds, provides such an immense peak that it gives me chills just thinking about it.

That was the whole idea to make something unique. It's not the easiest thing to do with music, because you have only got a specific palette you can draw from, so I'm proud of the way we did that and stayed true to that kind of ethos.

We were just writing all the time, we’d be dealing with 24 songs for each record and on another day those songs might have made the record. It’s part of the bigger picture of what that is.” Gomez Bandages 'Skin' for Second LP". MTV. 18 August 1999. Archived from the original on 29 July 2021 . Retrieved 29 July 2021. With Liquid Skin Gomez was the same band but thrust into a different world, building on songs written at the same time as the debut. The bedroom “communal” songwriting amongst friends became untethered by possibility, which can be heard in the album’s world of sound.
