Chamberlain stared at Ames, heard the bitterness, something new, looked at his hand again, the handkerchief. "No, sir. No mud here."

For those who are new, Gods and Generals starts at the beginning of the American Civil War and follows four of the major commanders through the first three years of the war. What makes this trilogy so unique is its even-handedness to both sides of the battle, which makes the war itself something tragic. Highly recommended series. John Alexander Dowie was portrayed as an immensely powerful man, who was also immensely stubborn. He held Chicago in the palm of his hand, for a season. His stubbornness was they key to his success and his failure. How a man could come to believe he was Elijah, then on his death bed reveal with his last words his belief that he was Jesus, is simply beyond me. Perhaps he had had a stroke—surely he could not become so deluded naturally. Zion, Illinois is a place I would like to visit one day, simply out of curiosity.

I love how Jeff Shaara writes. It takes some getting used to, yes, but once you get used to it...Brilliant! Outstanding!!!!!! I especially love how he focuses on the army, barely touches the political side of the war-and when the political side is touched, it's mostly negative.

One of the reasons I’ve been reading this trilogy – starting with The Killer Angels – is to really be able to wrap my head around this war. I’ve always known that slavery was the root cause, but I couldn’t understand why the entire south would fight so HARD…. Just to keep slaves?? I mean, I can see why the wealthy southerners wanted to hang on to their free labor... But there had to be more to it. Charles F. Parham, in my opinion, should have stayed away from Zion, Illinois. Wilbur Voliva certainly had it in for him with his sodomy accusation. So many of these men and women seemed to thrive on adversity, seeking it until it finally did them in. Persecution seems to do very many Christians in. Here are my thoughts on the matter: Had Parham's enemies had real proof of his being arrested for sodomy, they would not have posted signed confessions, but the actual police report. Therefore, the job of the historian is to separate fact from fiction and to tell the whole story no matter where it leads. Another source Roberts Liardon relies on is Gordon Lindsay, of the books listed are pretty much just more of John G Lakes in his own words. For example, “The Astounding Diary of John G Lake.” And a diary after all is nothing more than another source of yet even more autobiographical material. Nothing wrong with that per se as diaries are considered primary source material and can be excellent sources. John G. Lake was one of the most impressive figures here, in my opinion. It is very sad what took place in Africa. Out of Africa... I would have preferred more on James Longstreet, considering his key role in the Southern military leadership, but what was provided about him was interesting and informative.Learnt so much about church history and realised some important truths about the faith through reading this book! God's Generals: The Revivalists covers the lives of John and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, D.L. Moody, Charles Finney, William and Catherine Booth, and Billy Graham among others. It was so inspiring to read about how each individual had a personal encounter with God - quite a few of these revivalists had been brought up in Christian homes, but only were truly transformed later in life. I like how the author doesn't just deliver the facts but explains what each of them underwent and ties it to specific Bible verses. I wish highschools would teach history like this. Most of my friends hate social studies, but I ADORE history.
