About this deal

Born in Morocco in 1962 to French parents, Marcel and Simone, the young Campillo had a peripatetic existence. His father was in the military and the family moved around grand residences in the former French colonies. When he was about 10, in Madagascar, he saw Jean-Luc Godard’s dystopian sci-fi Alphaville; the film was roundly booed by the soldiers, but for Campillo it was the early stages of a lifelong obsession with the New Wave, especially Godard and Éric Rohmer. I think these features are fantastically interesting. People sign the land in various ways – it’s not all about big houses, forts and things.” Ultimately, we still don’t know who the Cerne Abbas Giant is or who put him there. But we do know that his history is long and complex, making him one of Dorset’s – and indeed Britain’s – most interesting features. Fortuitously, I had recently met Twilly Cannon, one of the leading activists in Greenpeace - the guy that trained their new recruits in how to accomplish challenging actions like hanging banners from bridges. I told him about my idea for a house-size condom - could we cover Helms’ house in less than five minutes so the cops couldn’t arrive and stop us? Twilly, ever the optimist, said “no problem.”

Actually the phallus – which is currently 11m (36ft) long – was certainly not so big when he was first erected. Giant support for Movember is a sight to behold". National Trust. 1 November 2013. Constructed at around the same time as nearby Cerne Abbey, the Giant may have been made to show defiance by the local pagans to the abbey’s Christian monks. But with evidence dating him to around 1,000 AD, we should perhaps look at who was living in Cerne Abbas around a millennium ago. Hy. Colley March M.D. F.S.A., " The Giant and the Maypole of Cerne", Proceedings, Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, Vol. 22, 1901. A 1996 study found that some features have changed over time, concluding that the figure originally held a cloak over its left arm and an object, possibly a severed head, beneath its left hand. [11] The former presence of a cloak was corroborated in 2008 when a team of archaeologists using special equipment determined that part of the figure had been lost; the cloak might have been a depiction of an animal skin. [12] In 1993, the National Trust gave the Giant a "nose job" after years of erosion had worn it away. [13] [14] Whatever its origin, the giant has become an important part of the culture and folklore of Dorset. Some folk stories indicate that the image is an outline of the corpse of a real giant. [58] One story says the giant came from Denmark leading an invasion of the coast, and was beheaded by the people of Cerne Abbas while he slept on the hillside. [96]
