He was staring into my eyes, munching his own speed-ravaged fea- tures, making an awful gummy sound as he did so. Worlds were reimagined where restraint and chaos merge, where the literary and idiotic are force-fed one another. The weird and frightening realm of the Fall at its best: something elusive

Much of that joy comes from camaraderie among FWF’s members as they shape new tunes. “This early writing stage is interesting,” Saoudi continues. “People don’t realise how hopeless and puny it is when you’re flailing artistically. I thought it would be funny to have a window into that process.” Accordingly, in one scene the band are debating taking hallucinogens for a creative burst: “I’m a psychedelic ranger,” declares keyboardist Nathan Saoudi. “I can drop acid at 11am and cook a family dinner by 4pm.” At most points, at least one member is having some form of chemically induced mental or physical breakdown Sawyer, Miranda (15 February 2022). It was a glowering, disgruntled collection that seemed to actively wanted to be disliked (one song is called Lebensraum; another, Duce, revealed an obsession with Mussolini). Ten Thousand Apologies: Fat White Family and the Miracle of Failure is set to be published in February 2022 by White Rabbit, and will recount the band's chaotic career since their formation in 2011. Are Fat White Family “an invitation, sent by misery, to dance to the beat of human hatred”? Are they leading us on a journey “from the blinding white heat of a midday Mediterranean shore to the embattled boudoir of Ike and Tina Turner, from the clotted grey of Dr Harold Shipman’s waiting room to the final hour of the Third Reich in the Berlin bunker”? God, I do hope so.
