About this deal

Bottles of the original Cigar Malt, the focus of this review, are available on the secondary market, although selection and price can vary dramatically. Essentially, this original Cigar Malt was a single malt with no age statement which was matured in American ex-bourbon barrels (white oak) before finishing in 30-year-old Matusalem oloroso sherry casks. Tasting Notes: The Dalmore Cigar Malt Today’s dram from our Whisky Advent Calendar carries that same pedigree – and was specifically blended to be enjoyed with a cigar. It’s a no-age-statement dram, but don’t let that put you off. It’s rich, flavourful, and has that signature Dalmore doughy texture. It’s Cigar Malt! SM: Flavour and body for me! The Cigar Malt is profoundly influenced by Matusalem sherry and red wine barriques, so there’s an abundance of deep, rich flavours that work well with the right cigar. The red wine barriques also contain a lot of tannins that contribute to a silky, velvety texture that dances with the cigar smoke on your palate as you draw. When you get the pairing just right there are not many better things in life! The core range, known as the Principle Collection, starts with the entry-level 12 Year Old , rising to the luxurious 21 Year Old . It also includes the popular Cigar Malt Reserve , designed specifically to be enjoyed with a cigar. Robust” is probably the correct word for me to use when describing how I found The Dalmore Cigar Malt. This was never intended to be the first and last word in single malts, and I feel it would be a mistake to view it in that light. This was a product which was engineered with a specific purpose. It is almost a niche whisky, although I hesitate to classify it firmly as such because I do not want to imply that this is an unapproachable dram for those who do not partake in cigars. Palate: Yet more toffee, caramel edging towards the burnt cinder-toffee side of things. Flamed orange-zest, and perfectly integrated sherry. I received a sample of a recent bottling — along with chocolates from Vosges designed for pairing specifically with the dram. More on those later; let’s start with the whisky. We may sell, license, transfer, assign or in any other way dispose of the Service (including Members) to any third party without any notification to you, e.g. (but without limitation) in connection with any reorganization, restructuring, merger or sale, or other transfer of assets. SM: Cheese is a big thing in my house at Christmas so I’ll be pulling out a bottle of the Port Wood Reserve after dinner! Delicious with a strong cheddar, creamy brie or salty Lanarkshire blue! I’ll also be making Christmas eggnog for the family with the Dalmore 12 Year Old, which works really well.

The spirit is initially matured in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks, yielding soft vanilla and honey notes. A proportion of the liquid remains in ex-Bourbon casks whilst the balance is apportioned between the finest Gonzalez Byass Sherry casks, previously holding 30-Year Old Matusalem Oloroso Sherry, and Cabernet Sauvignon wine barriques. The three styles are then expertly brought together to perfectly combine their unique characteristics and flavours. Nose: Strong, creamy malt notes, kettle corn, tobacco, charred oak, raisin bread, cereal grains, light amount of leather. Perhaps the name plays mind games on you, because it does come across as smoky. Not peaty, but with more of a chimney soot and creosote character in the mix. Sherry fully overloads the nose — here showing as leathery and dense, with tons of incense and a raisiny, plum pudding character that almost evokes a bit of a Port influence. The palate again pours on the sherry notes, dense with old oloroso character, brooding and austere and, one might suggest, insistent that a cigar be involved in this experience. Burnt orange peel lingers on the tongue as the whisky opens up, with notes of Christmas spice, well-oiled wood, and a gentle perfume character that layers in dried but indistinct floral notes. The finish reprises the whisky’s smokier elements, with more citrus lingering — and a touch of dark chocolate.

Its highly recognisable 12-point stag has become an iconic motif, and some of its expressions are highly prized. Old and rare bottlings even command record prices, both on the primary and secondary markets. Dalmore’s Cigar Malt Reserve is a whisky that has never fully resonated with me since its relaunch in 2011, its extreme use of sherry putting me off a bit. The recipe appears to have changed somewhat since our last full review 10 years ago, with Dalmore now describing it thusly: We may, but are not under any obligation, to release new functionalities and tools or other features for the Service every now and then.
