The story of Dungeons & Dragons, the iconic tabletop role-playing game, began in 1974. Since then, it’s served as the inspiration for countless daring adventures — and, arguably, entire genres in the video game industry. It’s the game that gave birth to actual play, a format that inspired the likes of Dimension 20, The Adventure Zone, and Critical Role and its The Legend of Vox Machina animated series. It provided the language and the lore for Netflix’s Stranger Things, inspired the mystery at the heart of the novel Ready Player One, and was adapted into the major motion picture Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. In any case, this encounter is actually written with a specific recommendation for if the party goes down (goblins rob them and leave them for dead). Which leads me to the point of this anecdote, which is that sometimes even when the party fails because it is too difficult you can let them survive somehow. You might plan it ahead sometimes, but it is also a reasonable time to just say "I wasn't expecting this, let's take a break while I think through what happens next".

Speaking of, Lost Mines of Phandelver is an excellent adventure for new Dungeons and Dragons players. LMoP does everything a good D&D campaign should do. We’ve written a few posts about getting started playing D&D if you’re a first-time DM or a brand new player! However, don’t get too far ahead of yourself. While a single encounter can last a few hours at the table, a published campaign book might last a few months to a year — or more — with regular play. Pace yourself, and always be paying attention to the appetite of the other players at the table.Finally, the Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure provides the same quality starting town and region as in the Starter Set and adds in a series of bounty-board style areas and location-based adventures. The numerous and diverse locales featured in the adventure book provide a nice variety of tasks for your adventuring party to complete. Cons It provides the adventuring party an immediate access point into the story with the disappearance of a trusted ally. I’m hoping to get the Stranger Things set for Christmas this year, so I can’t speak specifically to if the storylines intersect with one another. I’ll update this comment when I have a chance to look over the Stranger Things set. However, I will say that shifting any campaign from one setting to another is really a matter of communication and understanding between player(s) and DM! If you all agree that you want to play D&D and that for that to happen certain narrative liberties might need to be taken to continue a particular campaign, then I don’t think you’ll have any issue moving from either the Essentials Kit or the Starter Set to Stranger Things. The included character sheets make the Starter Set a great jumping off point for those that do not want to be slowed down by complex character creation and customization. Of course, you are welcome to tweak and change anything about the provided characters you might like to, but the only thing you have to add yourself is a name for your adventurer. The character sheets include leveling guides letting you know what to do when you gain experience and its time to level up.

There are 6 unique designs (Beach, Grassland, Snow, Stone/Dungeon, Wood/Tavern, and Parchment/Old Maps). All you need do is bring out your D&D miniatures and activate your gaming mood. If you are shopping for a battle mat that you can use indoors and outdoors, consider IT'S A SKIN Battle Mat. This battle mat offers many great features and accessories, making it one of the best D&D battle mats on the market. It has an extra large playing surface measuring 36" x 24". If you were considering buying two standard battle mats, now you only have to buy one. So while you could spend hours upon hours stressing over CRs (and the CR system is not really that reliable anyway), it's really not worth it. My party was defeated twice, once in that first little encounter because they didn't really know the game, and once because of an elaborate series of player driven decisions and bad die rolls the module included no plans for. I had to come up with a reason for them to be kept alive in the later case. It was the worst thing that ever happened, and it actually ended up making things more fun in the end. Images show that it comes with an introductory rulebook, an adventure book for Dungeon Masters, a set of blue plastic dice, and some pre-generated character sheets.

More dice are provided than the Starter Set, but you will still probably need to buy more if you want to play in-person. If you know exactly what your players want, great! You can choose from our recommendations above. But it's OK if you don’t know your players’ tastes very well. Odds are, if your players are newbies also, they don’t know for sure what they want either. In situations like this, it’s a good idea for your first adventure to be a buffet of different playstyle options. That way, your players will probably find some part of the adventure they can latch onto. Just be sure to take note of when each player’s eyes light up—you’ll want to include more of that in future adventures.Easier, in a situation where the party isn't doing so hot, maybe the enemies in one of the next encounters before they get rest simply aren't there. This is also the easiest time to throw in those unarmored, unarmed, etc. enemies I suggested above. When this is not appropriate you can just have the enemies use suboptimal tactics. Other than one very avoidable encounter with Hobgoblins they never run into anyone who is necessarily going to be a particularly skilled and sage tactician. In fact, you may want to hold off on investing in too many books mainly because D&D is in the midst of a large-scale rules refresh leading up to the launch of One D&D in 2024.
