About this deal

When Fulfil discontinued the ‘ Lemon Zinger’ I was more than a little bitter (pun fully intended). Although Barebell’s attempt isn’t quite as good, it’s certainly not bad. It’s not bad at all. After some chewing, the bar does become a little tasteless, once the hit of salty peanut has passed. After a brief, albeit blissful, moment, the bar becomes regular old chocolate protein bar, until you move in for the next mouthful.

Barebells sure love their sprinkles – this bar is adorned with some white disks which, although cute, have no discernible purpose or relation to fudge whatsoever. But, unnecessary adornments aside, the bar is deliciously sweet – as you would expect fudge to be. I felt like I could taste the sugar alcohols a bit more in this flavor, but it wasn’t overpowering by any means. The flavor was on point and I really enjoyed it.

Health Benefits of Protein Bars

But that is exactly what we have with Barebells protein bars. They are, hands down, my favorite protein bar on the market right now. This review is in no way sponsored by Barebells or biased in any way. I’m about to rave about these protein bars, so I felt it necessary to preface this review by saying that. At 55g these bars are slightly smaller than average, but they are also slightly lower in calories, with each being around 200kcal. Although the macros range depending on flavour, each boasts an impressive nutritional profile. You’re guaranteed 20g of protein, around 15g carbs, and minimal sugar, although the fat content (8-10g, with around 5g saturated fat) might put some people off. It’s a classic protein bar flavour, and a go-to for many people. Barebells’ offering certainly looks good, coated in a thin layer of milk chocolate and sprinkled with cocoa soya crispies.

Five years later in the August 2003 FLEX, there were six bars advertised: Detour, U-Turn, Labrada’s Lean Body Gold, Steel, Pure, and Meso-Tech. The term “protein bar” was still not in wide use. Meso-Tech was a “Meal Replacement Energy Bar,” U-Turn was at least called a “Protein Energy Bar,” and the ad for Detour asked if it was a “Candy Bar on Steroids?” They’re not insanely high in fiber like Quest Bars, and they don’t contain a ton of sugar alcohols either (only around 5g per bar).

All in all I was left wanting more coconut and more choco, and my jaw was left wanting a rest. Caramel Cashew (6/10) The flavour here is really nice. It’s definitely lemony, but not so zingy as to make you wince. The curd layer is a great addition, and any bitterness is beautifully balanced by the sweetness from the white chocolate. Milk protein, milk chocolate (18.5%), (sweeteners: Maltitol, cocoa butter, whole milk powder, cocoa mass, emulsifier: soy lecithins, flavorings) glycerin, isomalto-oligosaccharides, collagen peptides, water, cashew (5.5%), white chocolate (4.5%) (with milk), peanut butter, palm fat, reduced fat cocoa powders, flavorings, sweeteners sucralose, acesulfame K. Short answer: No. But honestly, what did you expect? The chocolate coating is creamy, the centre is soft (definitely reminiscent of nougat), the caramel layer is nice and moist, and the hazelnut pieces certainly add a slight crunch; but this is definitely not Rocher-esque. The Coconut-Choco bar is absolutely exploding with coconut flavor, wrapped in creamy milk chocolate and smothered in real coconut flakes. Because you shouldn’t have to fight an endless battle between eating what you love, and having abs.

Historically speaking, protein bars have been very dense and chewy. For bars that have tried to mimic the candy bar textures, I’ve found that the flavor is not quite there, or they end up tasting very artificial (like Fit Crunch Bars). In terms of flavor, this bar actually reminds me of a Twix bar, which is one of my favorite candy bars of all time.

The centre is very soft, almost fudge-y and with barely any chew. The chocolate coating is sweet and creamy, albeit a little thin. The crispies on the top and throughout the centre are plentiful and add a wonderful crunch. Texture-wise it’s pretty spot on. So, if you haven’t heard of Barebells, or have seen them and assumed they were called “barbells protein bars,” then you’re likely not alone!
