English translations of the original Babar books are routinely republished in the UK and in the US, individually and in collections. De Brunhoff: My great grandmother, Ida de Brunhoff, married a man named Philippe Bunau-Varilla, who owned Le Matin, the newspaper, and helped fund the Panama Canal. In the 1920s, one of the family relations, Giselle Bunau-Varilla, traveled to Africa. She ended up in Kenya, where she settled.

Jean de Brunhoff ( French pronunciation: [ʒɑ̃ də bʁynɔf]; 9 December 1899 – 16 October 1937) was a French writer and illustrator remembered best for creating the Babar series of children's books concerning a fictional elephant, the first of which was published in 1931. According to the story, while she was on safari in the Belgian Congo, she shot an elephant. Afterwards, she discovered that she was pregnant and vowed she would never shoot another elephant. It also focused that branch of the family on conservation work. Her daughter, Oria Douglas-Hamilton, helps run Save the Elephants. Babar comes to us now in a show, at the Morgan Library & Museum, of the early drafts and watercolor drawings for the first books by both de Brunhoff père and de Brunhoff fils. Jean had produced the very first Babar book at the demand of his wife and two children, who had fallen in love with an elephant-centered bedtime story that she had been telling the children in the summer of 1930. He came from a family of artists perched on the ledge—a broad one in the France of his time—between fine-arts painting and book and fashion illustration. (De Brunhoff’s father had worked with the academic Impressionist James Tissot, and his brother was the editor of French Vogue.)
