About this deal

Harriet is never described as autistic in any of the six books, but Smale has retroactively labelled her as such after being diagnosed with autism herself. [181] What makes creating comics such a great hobby to get into, is that the development process is ideal for learning abilities and improving old skills, such as: I can’t help thinking that something is very very wrong, when someone often “pauses” the verbal and non-verbal interaction, and her/his expression is more or less blank, as this would be usually a bad sign when interacting with neurotypical people, signifying, that you’ve hurt their feelings, they are reluctant to talk to you, they don’t really like you at all or something along those lines. It stresses me out to no extent when the interaction doesn’t flow properly, and I’ve had to build a set of survival skills for this type of situations.

Sensory: Life on the Spectrum is truly a spectrum of bursting colors, emotions, and experiences of multiple autistic people. Rebecca Ollerton, who goes by Bex (she/they pronouns), decided to do this collaboration before Autism Acceptance Month in April, 2021. They wanted to bring many autistic comic artists together and post comics throughout the month of April using the hashtag #asdcomictakeover. There were so many comic artists and writers that she decided to create a book compilation, especially since a lot of the current published material is outdated and inaccessible. This anthology is a refreshing breath of clean, fresh air, that lightens up the synapses in one’s brain. Lyons, Margaret (23 September 2011). I am smarter than many people who talk down to me. It’s an objective fact. Doesn’t make me better than them (and the commenter who said that never stated it made her better than anyone, either – projecting your own insecurities much?). But it does make me arguably more capable of understanding language, nuance and metaphor. And it does make the immediate assumption that I am some kind of ignoramus because I am developmentally delayed unbelievably offensive. Nesa, Kamrun (31 August 2021). To play devil’s advocate here … often when I speak to a child or adult [with their parent present] as if they understand everything I am saying in a very grown-up manner (which I do ‘as if’), parents ‘jump in’ to answer, correct, save or otherwise without giving time for the person to answer or (when no language is present, especially) react. And then I was thinking about my friends that I had modeled Ayda after, it was like oh, those are my autistic friends, oh my god, just putting it together of like, absolutely. So then I jumped in, I did a bunch of research, I was like if this character is around longer, is more nuanced, let's research this and get this right. Archie says, “Each person with autism will have a set of traits all in different areas of the spectrum. The areas where they don’t have a trait will function no differently to a neurotypical brain but maybe affected by circumstances.”

A video of the routine went viral, gaining more than 2.5 million views and making Wells an unelected spokesperson for all autistic people. ‘That was a lot of pressure,’ he says. ‘Everyone wanted to know what it meant to be autistic, but he was still working it out for himself.’ This Edinburgh show is therefore all about identity, neurodiversity and the pressures of finding social media fame.
