About this deal

Ensure all staff have training from autistic experts and allies that understand autism and sensory needs.

With its unwritten rules, the world can seem a very unpredictable and confusing place to autistic people. This is why they oftenprefer to haveroutinesso that they know what is going to happen. They may want to travel the same way to and from school or work, wear the same clothes or eat exactly the same food for breakfast. This will significantly reduce noise and escalation on the ward and reduce the frequency of distress caused by alarms for those with auditory sensitivity. This is a task designed to simulate the difficulties that many people with autism encounter when trying to communicate. Pupils take part in an activity in which they have to think very carefully about the words they use and what they are saying. This resource contains an editable, 120 slide presentation on autism and Autism Awareness Day (2nd April) and Autism Awareness Week. I had the privilege of teaching and working with many amazing young people on the autistic spectrum for twenty years. People with autism are often misunderstood. Hopefully, this presentation will help others to be more informed about, and more understanding of, autism. Autism Only Survey 2022 (we heard from some autistic people that they wanted a revised version of the Online Survey 2022 that just asked about the experience of autistic people.)Involve autistic people with relevant expertise in reviewing the sensory environment, in a meaningful way. So things need to be familiar - not in code (hence plain English) - but this also means that realism (or skeumorphism) is better than unrealistic "flat" - so shading and depth are preferable to bright "Fisher Price" colours.

And for this reason, I would recommend that we start with a poster that says "For all users:" with the basic best practices (which include, e.g. "write in plain English", "don't use ALL CAPS", etc.). Storytelling is a non-didactic teaching method and offers a chance to share a new perspective about the world. This personal space story helps children with ASClearn about boundaries, improving their understanding of social conduct. Neutralise smells wherever possible. (closing doors, using unscented products, supporting people to ‘mask’ smells with preferred scents, or to use preferred products.)Supporting Autistic Pupils Post-Training Assessment What do I need to know about people with Autism?

Arts and crafts. This is a fun and creative way for children to express themselves. This could be painting, drawing, creating things and many more. These statements can remind both students and teachers how Autistic people might feel in different scenarios, and how we can support them through everyday life. If you liked this poster, then why not get creative in class and encourage children to explore their own Autism Awareness display poster ideas? Use our poster as inspiration to create a whole Autism awareness display board in your classroom. Perhaps children can create a poster for each one of the statements included in our poster, making multiple larger posters featuring designs by your students. Each Autistic childwill have individual learning needs and abilities. That's why it’s incredibly important that teachers feel equipped to effectively support Autistic childrenin the classroom.
