About this deal

I was utterly charmed by this enthralling romp set in Regency England. For those who love Georgette Heyer, Jane Austen, or Bridgerton...This sumptuous, fast-paced treat is unputdownable, whisking you away to the heady world of gowns, gossip, and gambles.” It was great to get a protagonist that’s honest and rather upfront about her scheming and watching her navigate the social etiquette of the upper classes (and the faux pas she inevitably makes along the way) was both phenomenally entertaining and period accurate.

The romance is a slow burn full of frustrations, pride and hesitant longing and I was here for it. A wonderful regency romantic comedy with heart that you need to add to your summer TBR. Georgette Heyer fans will devour this fun, fast-paced comedy of manners. Kitty is an unapologetically ambitious fortune-hunter and a fabulous heroine, full of tenacity, surprises, and love of family. Our strong, suspicious hero is her perfect match, leading to laugh-out-loud interactions and banter that sparkles. A delightful debut!” No sooner had Jane relayed this unusual message to Cecily, than the full household-all of Kitty's four sisters and Bramble the dog-descended upon the parlor, instantly filling the space with noise.

Advance Praise

Basically: this doesn't reinvent the wheel for Regency Romance nor does it want to. I had a fun time, it was well-written, and I'll read Irwin again. What I liked most was the constant emphasis on money and the heroine refusing to be apologetic about fortune-hunting. Kitty is fantastic and unrepentant and manipulative — more heroines like that, please. She’s got just twelve weeks to find a rich husband and save her sisters – and she must use every ounce of cunning and ingenuity she possesses to climb London society if she is to succeed. So funny and charming, I hope many readers find their way to this lovely debut from Sophie Irwin. It is undoubtedly one of my favorite books of the year. They were alone. Completely and utterly alone now, with no one to turn to. Mama and Papa were gone, and in this hour of most grievous need, where more than ever she wished to ask for their advice, she could not. There was simply no one left to whom she could turn. Panic was rising within her. What was she to do now? The door opened and closed with a bang. "She says it's not there and if you've sold it, she'll be very upset because it was a gift from the vicar."

This book felt like an updated Jane Austen, with all the things I love about her books (the humor, the social commentary, the love stories) and none of the things that I don’t (like the classism and the slut-shaming). It made me smile from start to finish, and I can’t recommend it enough.” A Lady's Guide to Fortune-Hunting is a sharp, modern, and absolutely delicious take on the marriage plot. Sophie Irwin's debut is one of the most fun, romantic books I've read in a long time. I cannot wait to see what she does next.” The book opens with Kitty Talbot being jilted by her fiance. Kitty being Kitty, she decides that the thing to do in response to this, is to go to London for the season and find herself an even richer husband, so that she might pay off her father’s debts and support her four younger sisters. There, she meets Archibald de Lacy, who seems a perfect fit for her plans… but for his older brother James, who sees right through her. If you like Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer this one is for you. If you like sweet romance with characters who are charming, full of humor and wit this is also for you. At times the language used went from the old UK way of speaking to modern day. At one point her sister uses the phrase “I was just saying” as a statement. A girl in 1818 using such a petulant phrase was jarring and took me out of 1818, straight into the present day,Irwin's debut is a delicious historical romcom in the vein of Martha Waters and Bridgerton without the smooching.”
