About this deal

The book offers fresh perspectives on Jason's journey, carefully avoiding repetition from his previous works. It's an engaging narrative filled with unique anecdotes and insights that deepen our appreciation of his life and career. As David Jason recalls, in a memoir as joyous as any episode, you'd have to be a plonker not to realise Only Fools was TV gold Daily Mail Like his friend and mentor Ronnie Barker, Jason is most comfortable when he's hiding behind a character. He's quite open about that, he's not comfortable being himself in public and perhaps there may be some of that hiding behind a character in the book. Is this the real David Jason? Maybe to a degree, maybe it's the version of him he wants us to know. I agree that star casting has now spoiled so many animations, though I wondered if the target audience for Peter Rabbit would know and recognise James Cordon. David Jason says “ In my first two books, I enjoyed sharing my life with the great British public, and I was overwhelmed by their support and kindness. In my new book, A Del of a Life, I am delighted to share with readers some of the hard-won lessons I’ve learned along the way – how to dream big, how to work hard, and how not to fall through the gap in the pub bar…

David Jason is a workaholic, he reminds us a number of times that he is the fourth hardest working actor in the country. At 80 years old he is still not looking to retire any time soon. For an actor who has been constantly working and created so many memorial characters this third volume of his memoirs shows a frustration of his industry grinding to a half. Jason, whose previous books include A Del of a Life (Century) and My Life (Arrow), said: “Writing my books and sharing my life with the great British public has been an enormous privilege, and I have been overwhelmed by readers’ support and kindness. An absolute delight . . . a romp with so much detail. Offers wisdom in difficult times . . . like being invited into his living room' BBC BREAKFAST

I grew up on programmes such as Open All Hours and Only Fools and Horses. Whilst I never really watched some of the other famous programmes that the actor has been in, he has always been a firm favourite from my childhood home to now well into my adult life. My husband is also a huge fan and we have the Only Fools and Horses box sets and watch them as well as the re runs on the telly. Hilarious and heartfelt new autobiography from the national treasure Sir David Jason Eastern Daily Press Jason's writing style is accessible and engaging, making the book a joy to read. However, while the book is immensely enjoyable, it misses the mark of the absolute 'FANTASTIC' books that hold a rare 5-star rating in my collection. There are British telly icons and then there is [...] Sir David Jason. This book is such gold ... an absolute delight' ZOE BALL He spent much of his early acting life in local rep and pantomime, he missed out on parts in Dad’s Army and Monty Python before his breakthrough when he got the part of Granville in Open All Hours although this didn’t take off straightaway. He is of course, best known as Derek (Del Boy) Trotter in Only Fools and Horses which again took until the third series to take off and he expresses his admiration for his co-stars and the wonderful writer John Sullivan who all played their part in making it such a success. Each chapter is an insight into what his life was like as an actor and trying to catch a break. There are disappointments along the way as well as some well deserved highs. We get little snippets of behind the scenes and the writers and actors that David has met and worked with along the way.

In celebration of Sir David Jason’s 80th year, A Del of a Life: Lessons I’ve Learnedrelives Jason’s extraordinary life and career from over 50 years in entertainment. From a trainee electrician to one of Britain’s most revered and loved actors, Jason shares heartfelt and hilarious wisdom with readers on subjects ranging from family to work, resilience to ebullience.

Fortunately, during my life and career I have been given all sorts of advice and learned huge amounts from some great and enormously talented people. I've been blessed to play characters such as Derek Trotter, Granville, Pop Larkin and Frost, who have changed my life in all sorts of ways, and taught me lessons that go far beyond the television set. And I've worked a few things out for myself as well, about friendship, ambition, rejection, success, failure, adversity and fortune. There are British telly icons and then there is Sir David Jason. This book is such gold . . . an absolute delight' ZOE BALL
