About this deal

Megumi Morino’s A Condition Called Love romantic manga series has caught the attention of many and due to fans’ continuous support, it has finally landed on an anime adaptation. What was interesting about this manga was the contrast between the love interests. The protagonist Hotaru was sweet and naive whilst the male love interest Hananoi was intense to the extent that some of what he said could be considered creepy. But I feel as though some of the weird things he said were slipped in there for comedic effect and that at his core Hananoi is not actually as serial killer-esque as some of his comments suggest. Granted, he did fall for Hotaru at an alarmingly fast rate, but she’s such a sweet and cute girl that it’s not as bizarre as every other character in this manga makes out. No, Hananoi clearly did have some issues as suggested by the glimpse of his home life that was shown, but mostly he just seemed like a very intense and devoted boyfriend. He has no real personality or interests of his own. The second they start their trial date, he starts changing everything about himself to try and fit into some ideal guy just based on what he *thinks* she would like. He gets rid of his earrings and cuts off his long hair, even though she never asked him to. He's never real, never really "himself."

I love the author's other story. But I don't know what to feel about this one. This clearly has problematic elements and it's about learning to be better. But I still feel like the mistakes they both make show that they aren't stable enough to be in a relationship. Snow Means Love: Hotaru and Hananoi interact for the first time face to face in the story by her shielding him from the falling snow. The next day he confesses his feelings towards her and asks her to date him. Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Hotaru's attentiveness and kindness are some of her most notable traits, though she isn't perfect and has her own past trauma she's trying to work through. Hananoi on the other hand doesn't seem to angst all of that much only because he's a perpetual Stepford Smiler who has buried his complexes so deep down it's hard for even those close to him to see. Doesn't change the fact that he's a loner by choice, Troubled, but Cute male lead. nowadays not only is a good means of entertainment that is good for your mental health but also save I've read a lot of shojo over the years, and at a certain point they all start blending together. This is one of the few series that I find to be actually memorable and genuinely curious about where it's going.

Alternative Titles

Bridal Carry: During their Christmas Eve date at the ice rink, Hananoi suddenly sweeps Hotaru off her feet in a bridal carry. He explains he did it all to make her feel like a princess as it's also her birthday but she rarely ever gets to celebrate as a special day just for her because of the holiday and family obligations. Chapter 37 - Our First Picnic • Chapter 38 - Our First Mistrust • Chapter 39 - Our First Fight • Chapter 40 - Our First Memory • Chapter 41 - Our First Make-Up

At first glance, it's easy to mistake it as another shoujo manga romanticizing unhealthy and obsessive behaviors. I would definitely be wary of that if you're easily uncomfortable with that, or you've had bad situations relating to that. I don't blame you for steering clear of this manga. A mere day after their unexpected encounter, the very walls of Hotaru’s familiar classroom bear witness to an unforeseen development as Hananoi-kun, driven by an undeniable compulsion, summons the courage to confess his desire to pursue a romantic relationship with her. Anyways, I find this take on the obsessive male lead trope to be really interesting since, in my opinion, it seems to stem from a place of fear (of being alone/without love) rather than a place of possessiveness. Rebecca Silverman from Anime News Network rated the first volume a C, praising the art and the character Hotaru, while criticizing Hananoi and their relationship, calling it "toxic". If you don’t feel like eating full meals, try to eat in small intervals. Try to go to bed at the same time every night. Meditate or go for a walk in the park. Just take one day at a time. 5. Resources

Chapter 17 - Our First Second Year • Chapter 18 - His First Tears • Chapter 19 - His First Rival • Chapter 20 - Our First Excursion So the guy she offers her umbrella to is super hot and popular at school. But he has a secret: he's a creep. The type to fall immediately "in love" with any random girl who pays him attention, until she figures out how obsessive he is and dumps him. This guy waves ALL the red flags. The main character simply shared her umbrella, and the next day he shows up in her classroom to make his "love confession" in front of everyone. She turns him down - having, again, ZERO interest in boys - but he shows up in front of school at the end of the day, waiting to walk her home, anyway. He won't take no for an answer, so she agrees they can hang out until Christmas Eve and see if her feelings change towards him. This manga would have you believe it's a cute, fluffy, high school romance. IT'S NOT! It's actually about a super creepy stalker! And I would have been happy to read "Joe Goldberg: the Manga," if it had been advertised as such, but the lying synopsis earns this manga one star and I'm not continuing it. Grow Old with Me: After Hotaru has agreed to just trial date Hananoi and asks him what he would like, he responds that he would love it if they could be buried next to each other in the same grave.

HOWEVER. The male lead is incredibly questionable. It's clear that Hananoi is in love with the idea of love more than Hotaru herself. There's an obsessiveness to the way he treats Hotaru and their tentative relationship. He certainly has some lovely, romantic moments dedicated to Hotaru but they are tainted by his need to be her perfect boyfriend. If this weren't a shojo title and he wasn't set up as the romantic lead, I would have expected him to do a 180 turn into a creepy stalker. Protagonist duo Hotaru Hinase and Saki Hananoi will officially be voiced by Kana Hanazawa ( Mitsuri in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) and Chiaki Kobayashi (Stark in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End), respectively, for which the character posters were released. The once familiar path she traversed now diverges, stretching out before her in an unknown and exhilarating manner. The series was a nominee for the 64th Shogakukan Manga Awards in the shōjo category. [38] It was also the runner-up for the ninth An An manga award. [39] In 2018, employees of one of the largest Japanese bookstores ranked the series as the tenth best manga of 2018. [40] The series ranked fifteenth in the 2020 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook's top manga for female readers. [41] Also in 2020, it was nominated for the Kodansha Manga Award in the shōjo category. [42] In 2021, it won the Kodansha Manga Award in the shōjo category. [43] After spending Christmas with Hananoi and realizing she doesn't want their trial dating period to end, Oblivious to Love Hotaru wonders to her friends if this feeling she has is love. Kyou screams "YES!" in her head but avoids telling Hotaru as to allow her to come to that conclusion on her own. So, with that in mind let’s see what we got here. A condition… has all the cheesy aspects of teenage romance with its adorably cute main female character (Hotaru), its kinda mysterious main male character (Hananoi) and its nice supporting cast of friends. Even better, he and Hananoi have a realistic relationship and interactions. They aren’t besties; they fight as two rivals should (within the confinements of social norms). But they also act like real people who learn to understand the other person, even if they don’t become friends. I was always confused by shoujos that make rivals in love become super close friends.
