About this deal

We hand-washed each flask with hot soapy water and let them air dry overnight, then ranked them on smell. You may think choosing a vacuum flask is a simple matter of grabbing the shiniest example in the camping shop (if it’s open!) and hoping for the best. Well, unfortunately we’ve tried that approach several times and have frequently been disappointed. The original and, judging from the results of our temperature test, still the best. This stainless steel flask is very durable, with a silicone base to protect against dents. The two-part stopper closes securely yet pours easily and has an integrated cup. In terms of outright heat-holding performance for up to 8 hours, nothing can touch the Ultimate Series. It was the best-performing flask we tested overall. It is relatively lightweight too. And if you’re concerned that the 500ml capacity will be too small, it’s worth noting that Thermos also makes a larger 900ml version. Full Specifications The GSI MicroLite 1000 Twist Water Bottle is a vacuum insulated stainless steel flask that has a one litre capacity but impressively small size and density. It is extremely lightweight at 0.37kg which is less than half the weight of the Stanley 18-8 for the same capacity.

The GSI employs a thin but reliable stainless steel wall that reduces the weight and also increases the internal space of the bottle. According to GSI, you can store 25% more liquid than any other flask for the same size. Capacity: 500ml / Temperature test: 0 hrs 90°c, 90 mins 89.3°c, 4 hrs 82.8°c, 6 hrs 79.2°c, 8 hrs 75.3°c, 24 hrs 50.9°c / Stainless steel interior and exterior / Cool-touch, no-slip finish / Protective silicone rings for ultimate durability / Two part stopper for smooth pouring. BUY NOW: THERMOS.CO.UK After Stanley, I found the Thermos – a brand which has become synonymous with insulated flasks – to come a close second in terms of heat retention. Red Paddle Co manufacture paddle boards, but now they’ve also launched a versatile equipment range, Red Original. The kit can be used by anyone (no paddling required) and their marine-grade stainless steel water bottle is cleverly designed. The higher quality steel means it doesn’t corrode like other metal drinks bottles, and can withstand the elements.Capacity: 1 litre (33oz) / Temperature test: 0 hrs 90°c, 90 mins 85.5°c, 4 hrs 79.1°c, 6 hrs 74.3°c, 8 hrs 69.9°c, 24 hrs 44.5°c / Made of food grade 18/8 stainless steel that doesn’t impart or retain flavour / Lid doubles as a mug ensuring you always have a cup handy / Silicon sleeve / Drinking stopper opens and closes with a slight turn / Additional standard stopper for optimum heat retention included / Tapered design for easier handling / Large mouth opening is easy to fill and clean. BUY NOW: PRIMUSEQUIPMENT.COM The Okadi is a 2.5L flask which offers extremely good capacity for both family and group adventures. It is fabricated from stainless steel which gives excellent core strength and durability. This thermos will last for a long period of time indeed. As we said before, the Milu is more bowl-shaped and can easily be eaten from directly. The 6.6cm wide opening is extremely convenient for easy filling and eating as well. How do Thermos flasks work? In short, they use a double walled construction, with the air removed from between these walls, forming a vacuum. Heat struggles to pass through the vacuum, meaning liquid stays at a roughly constant temperature.

Thermos flasks use an ingenious mechanism which consists of dual layers separated by a vacuum cavity between them. The vacuum is a region of space with no air or anything at all in it – this creates a natural barrier to heat leaving or entering the innermost chamber holding your drink. That’s why liquids in the flask remain hot or cold for longer than they would in a standard plastic bottle. We dropped each flask five times from 90cm to mimic a dropped flask. Those with large dents that inhibited function or ability were rated low. That being said, we found that performance was not quite as good as a dedicated drinks flask – the Milu will keep your hot drinks hot for six hours and the cold ones for 10 hours. The best thermos flasks can keep liquids hot or cold for a long time – over 12 hours in some cases. Look for a two-layer construction with an intermediate vacuum layer. This prevents heat loss by convection and conduction. To help you choose which one to invest in, I tried and tested a selection of flasks that promise to keep your beverages colder and hotter for longer, measuring how much heat was retained or how cool they kept respectively over a period of 12 hours.
