About this deal

Reavely provides a back story for each character, but they’re generally lightly sketched in rather than developed fully – meaning it’s hard to sympathise with the women and their woes. In The Book Club Murders, someone is killing the Agathas and Charlie, an Agatha herself, will investigate.

There are certain cozies I enjoy more than others – and book club or bookish themes are one of those.

Charley’s best friends, Frankie and Dmitri, added a lot to the story and were people I was glad to get to know. A part of me had expected a closed-door mystery where the members of a book club are rounded up by a book-hating maniac, or maybe by someone who hated the book chosen for discussion. Through some of the townspeople’s interactions with them, we get a glimpse of how racism is a part of life for anyone who looks or sounds different.

Tuesday Club Murders: Miss Marple’s Thirteen Problems The Tuesday Club Murders: Miss Marple’s Thirteen Problems

There are several murders, there is a serial killer, which is a little uncommon in a cozy, but again, not graphic so if still fits. Even when you think you've guessed the ending, your armchair detective ego will be hit when you find out the truth. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book I felt like I was right there, watching the action taking place all around me. Could there really be a serial killer on the loose – something that second in command DI Palmer seems particularly keen on proving? I loved the backdrop of a community book club and its group of Agathas, especially how their reading list became connected to the murders. All these characters, each with their own backstories as well as their involvement in the plot, could easily have confused things. The Book Club Murders was a really nice fast paced sort of crossover between a cozy mystery and a mystery/thriller read. When Izzy O’Brien flees the city centre apartment she shared with her controlling partner, she relocates to the seaside town of Dun Laoghaire, and the house she inherited from her aunt. Once again short chapters, so easy to pick up and put down if you’re busy… or just keep reading as you get pulled deeper into the story. Charley is my new favorite protagonist and the Agatha's book club is a group I would join even with murder swirling around.
