Empty Nest: Even after the boy grows up and moves out, his mother will sometimes sneak into his house to hold him and sing the song. Obviously enough, I'm in the minority here, but this children's book is weird, creepy, disturbing and will probably give me more nightmares than any Stephen King novel ever did. In spite of the aggravation caused by her son's behavior, the mother visits his bedroom every night to cradle him in her arms, and sing a lullaby promising to love him forever. The dad sneaking in on the teenage daughter to hold her, or later on when she's married he's climbing through her window to her bed? The kids are all coming off the couch, gesturing wildly at the picture, and just freaking the fuck out in general, at this point. His mother responds by saying that he is driving her crazy and that maybe the best thing would be for her to put him in a zoo. Most people nowadays know that if they acted like this with their child that someone would quickly do an intervention on them. So in his waking life, her son only experiences his mother's disdain, not the love that she feels when night falls. And…yes, I will age myself by sharing that my sons are now in their 40’s and they have kids… my grandkids, that I love forever, too.

Would have loved to get the 15 year old's opinion, but he was busy sleeping off the previous night's video game marathon. Munsch does a wonderful job of displaying the young boys progression through the different stages in life. This book was listed fourth on the 2001 Publishers Weekly All-Time Best selling Children's Books list for paperbacks at 6,970,000 copies (not including the 1,049,000 hardcover copies). After her son enters adulthood and leaves home, his elderly mother occasionally sneaks into his bedroom at night to croon her customary lullaby. My recommendation is to read it first to yourself before you read it as a bedtime story for your kids.
