Each chapter in the book covers one of the stages or milestones of her life, and focuses on the animal that played a key role at the stage.

Gerry doesn't learn much, but the Belgian consul spends a fair amount of time shooting sickly stray cats out his window, which teaches Gerry that death can be humane when an animal is suffering.And of course wildlife is core to the show, and there is plenty of close ups of various insect life inserted, the story lines are not rushed as is fitting the atmosphere, so it somehow adds to the whole experience.

Finally, Durrell's novel can also be seen as sharing broad thematic similarities with Henry David Thoreau's Walden, as all promote a sense of reverence and respect for the natural world. I seem to remember that the weather in the winter of 1987 in the UK was not the best, including the terrible storms that October. In the last one- third of the book, it gets a little deeper into the technical details of horse training and racing, and I found these a bit confusing and somewhat boring. Mother insists on accompanying Margo and the Turk to the cinema the next night, after which the relationship ends due to the Turk's horribly strong perfume. From her struggles at boarding school to her triumphs as an amateur jockey and event rider, Clare weaves her own coming-of-age story through portraits of the beloved horses and dogs, from the protective Candy to the unruly Frank, who were her earliest friends.

Once I was back in my reading form I picked it up again, and that is when I realized that what worked for me was reading a couple of chapters every few days, and I am glad that I did finally finish it. Clare gallops joyously through her rather eccentric life, basing each chapter on a beloved dog or horse from the period being described. That night, she resurfaces and she and Geronimo fight to the death, with Geronimo emerging victorious.Many thanks, as well, to the Public Library system, and the many Librarians that manage, organize and keep it running, for the loan of this book!
