About this deal

Seven years of maturation take place in ex-bourbon casks, with a further 2 years inside quarter casks – 125L diddybutts that accelerate the oak’s influence on the whisky, imparting more rapid flavour to the spirit. The end result is a full-bodied expression of The Arran Malt combining power and finesse full of rich vanilla sweetness and bold peppery spice. I can’t (or rather won’t) drink the 21 “just because” or without spending my time scrutinising it – it just so happens to be gorgeous whisky so is ultimately worth that scrutiny. If you’ve been around the American bourbon block, you will immediately recognize the nose of the Arran Quarter Cask. The Arran 10 might be the winner of accolades, but this Quarter Cask expression is, to all intents and purposes, a large step up from that great entry point, even if it was young. The great advantage of the quarter cask, of course, is that its generous internal surface area to volume ratio gives the whisky inside much more wood contact and influence in a short period. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise. Neither Whiskybase nor any of its group companies (including any subsidiary, affiliate or holding company), directors, officers and employees shall in any way be liable or responsible (whether directly, indirectly, consequential) for any costs, claims, damages, liabilities and other expenses, including any consequential loss, suffered by you resulting from your use of the Service. We have the right to ask you to provide proof of your age and/or to provide further identification to prevent underage usage and/or for any other legal or legitimate purpose. For those of you who are not familiar with the term “Quarter Cask”, it simply refers to the size/dimensions of the cask itself.

On the tongue, I get apricots and pineapple, followed by menthol, followed by black pepper, which carries through to the relatively long finish, complimented by vanilla late in the finish. This cheese has a truly unique flavour that’s best enjoyed on its own or with a Wooley’s of Arran Oatie. Arran's The Bothy single malt has been so well received by whisky lovers it has joined the Island distillery's permanent range.

The Arran Single Malt selected for this cask strength expression was initially matured in first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels for 7 years before being transferred for secondary maturation into smaller Quarter casks also made of the finest American oak for a further 2 years. Though an Island whisky, it’s actually more Highland in style - although their Machie Moor range does provide peated expressions. While I am am easily seduced by a sherry cask , my mood was for something a bit more spicy… a bit more hot. This box also contains two beautiful branded Glencairn glasses to round off your enjoyment of this fresh island dram. If you’re looking to try something different, their cask finish series uses the likes of Sauternes casks and Amarone casks to provide unique and interesting flavour profiles. Initially matured in first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels for 7 years it is then transferred for a secondary more intense maturation in smaller Quarter casks also made of the finest American oak for a further 2 years.
