About this deal

Specifications can only indicate a drive's speeds, so we put a WD Red 6TB drive through our usual range of tests to see how fast it was. Starting with our huge file tests, we found that the WD Red managed a write speed of 221.9MB/s and a read speed of 234.6/s. This put the drive at 14% slower than the 4TB Toshiba N300, most likely due to the WD Red's slower spindle speed. WD Red Pro hard drives are designed to handle the rigorous demands of high-intensity 24x7 multi-user NAS environments and increase system durability. The RAID controller maps out the bad sector, locating it elsewhere on the drive. The missing sector is rebuilt using parity data from the other drives in the array. Futuremark’s PCMark benchmarking suite should need no introduction – it’s been a staple of PC benchmarking for the better part of a decade. PCMark offers a range of tests to gauge every aspect of a computer’s performance and presents it in a simple final result. Thankfully, it also breaks down the overall score with individual subsystem scores (such as Memory, Storage, et cetera) in addition to providing individual test results. Compatibility: Desktop hard drives are not always tested for compatibility in NAS and can present problems during integration.

PCMark was more favorable to the Red 6TB than HD Tune is. With that test, the drive placed in the middle of the seven drives, whereas here, it places only above the Red 4TB. Let’s see how it fares with our other metrics: As we’re not too concerned with the performance of the PC as a whole, for our testing here we deselect all default tests and run only the “Secondary Storage” suite, with the hard drive in question as the chosen drive. Tests in this suite range from the loading of applications, running a Windows Defender scan, editing video, gaming and more.Noise and vibration: Typically designed for single drive applications, average desktop drives are not optimized for multi-drive systems which have higher noise and vibration levels. When these drives are added to a NAS, the additional vibration can reduce the reliability and life span of the drive. Going forward, hard drives will be tested in the PC with just 4GB of RAM installed. That’s enough to allow Windows to run with lots of breathing room, but not enough to skew our test results – something helped by the fact that our smallest real-world test transfer is 10GB. None of this means that our older results are inaccurate, per se – it just means we feel more confident with our retested ones. Diese läuft jetzt übrigens seit 1769 Stunden ebenfalls problemlos und kühl (28°C) und ohne Fehler. Hoffentlich bleibt das dabei.

As an industry-leading hard drive manufacturer, Western Digital stands behind their NAS storage solutions with the assurance of a 3-year limited warranty and world-class support services for hassle free data storage. Compatibility: Unlike desktop drives, WD Red Pro hard drives are specifically designed and tested for NAS and include NASware™ technology which fine tunes drive parameters to match NAS system workloads for optimum performance.

Recently, there has been a discussion regarding the recording technology used in some of our WD Red hard disk drives (HDDs). We regret any misunderstanding and want to take a few minutes to discuss the drives and provide some additional information. Also ganz so beunruhigt bin ich nicht, aber dass die beiden sich unterschiedlich verhalten, ist schon ein bißchen komisch.Error recovery controls: WD Red™ NAS hard drives are specifically designed with RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures within the NAS system. WD Red Plus is the new name for conventional magnetic recording (CMR)-based NAS drives in the WD Red family, including all capacities from 1TB to 14TB. These will be the choice for those whose applications require more write-intensive SMB workloads such as ZFS. WD Red Plus in 2TB, 3TB, 4TB and 6TB capacities will be available soon. Since drive 3 is a consumer drive it goes into a retry loop, repeatedly attempting to read and correct the bad sector. A hard disk's cache can help iron out performance differences, with the amount you get depending on the drive's capacity. With the 10TB drive, you get a whopping 256MB of cache; 8TB drives have 128MB of cache; and 6TB and below have 64MB of cache. In comparison, the Toshiba N300 range has a spin speed of 7,200rpm and a 128MB of cache across the line. WD Red 6TB review: Speed and performance

The above scenario is what would play out with an Areca RAID controller (I've verified this personally). Other controllers may behave differently. A controller unable to do a bad sector remap might have just marked drive 1 as bad, but the key is that the rebuild would be much less likely to fail as drive 3 would not drop completely offline once the controller ran into the additional bad sector. The moral of this story is that typical consumer grade drives have data error timeouts that are far longer than the drive offline timeout of typical RAID controllers, and without some form of TLER, two bad sectors (totaling 1024 bytes) is all that's required to put multiple terabytes of data in grave danger.Do right by your NAS and choose the drive purpose-built for NAS with an array of features to help preserve your data and maintain optimum performance. Take the following into consideration when choosing a hard drive for your NAS: We’re committed to providing the information that can help make an informed buying decision for as many uses as possible. Thank you for letting us know how we can do better. We will update our marketing materials, as well as provide more information about SMR technology, including benchmarks and ideal use cases. Western Digital’s exclusive NASware™ technology fine tunes drive parameters to match NAS system workloads which helps increase performance and reliability. Yet again, the Red 6TB drive only manages to beat out its 4TB brethren, but that shouldn’t strike us as too much of a surprise. Unlike most of the drives in this lineup, the Red series’ platters spin at 5.3K RPM. Seagate’s NAS drive, by comparison, bumps the RPM to 5.9K, which could be the main differentiating factor in the random write test. Real-World: Transfers Similar to HD Tune, AIDA64’s built-in disk benchmarker is one of the easiest to run. The developer also keeps up on top of architectural trends so that you feel confident that the algorithms don’t get much better than this. This spreads beyond the storage benchmark, as AIDA64’s system stress-testers is one of the best, if not the best, out there.
