About this deal

In an FNA, the doctor uses a very thin, hollow needle attached to a syringe to withdraw (aspirate) a small amount of breast tissue or fluid from a suspicious area. Dr Thornton will investigate the nipple discharge by performing an examination and reviewing the breast imaging ( mammogram and ultrasound) and also occasionally undertaking a nipple smear.

Your doctor or nurse will tell you how to care for the area where the biopsy was done and what you can and can’t do while it heals. The main advantages of FNA are that it is fairly quick, it often doesn't require anesthesia, and the skin doesn’t have to be cut, so no stitches are needed and there is usually no scar. Ultrasound-guided biopsy: During this breast biopsy, your provider uses ultrasound (an imaging system that uses sound waves to make images of internal body tissues and structures) to guide them to the area of your breast that they need to biopsy. If general anesthesia is given, the anesthesiologist will keep checking your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and blood oxygen level during the surgery.

We connect patients, caregivers, and family members with essential services and resources at every step of their cancer journey. Your doctor may suggest a needle biopsy to help diagnose a medical condition or to rule out a disease or condition. The anaesthetist gives the anaesthetic through a small needle in a vein in the back of your hand (cannula). A needle biopsy sample may reveal what's causing inflammation, and what types of cells are involved. You’ll likely lie stomach-down on an exam table with your breast that your provider is going to biopsy positioned through a hole in the table.

This type of core needle biopsy is done under guidance of an MRI — an imaging technique that captures multiple cross-sectional images of the breast and combines them, using a computer, to generate detailed 3D pictures. Once the suspicious area has been located, the skin is cleaned and numbing medicine (local anesthesia) is injected into the area. Your doctor or nurse will give you information about the test and may ask you to sign a consent form.Holding the ultrasound device against the breast, the radiologist locates the mass, makes a small incision to insert the needle, and takes several core samples of tissue.

Your doctor may send a swab of the nipples to be cultured, to identify the most appropriate antibiotic to use. Unlike wire localization, these devices are fully inserted into your breast and don’t stick outside of your breast. In certain situations, you may receive intravenous (IV) sedatives or general anesthetics before your needle biopsy. This means that the area is easily found again and seen on all your future breast ultrasound scans or mammograms. If the biopsy was done on an outpatient basis, you should plan to have another person drive you home.
