Alloygator rim protectors cover the edges of your wheels to keep them safe from harm and, until now, have had this market all to themselves. But new Rimblades claim to offer similar protection in just as many colours. Fit alloy wheel rim protector in warm conditions. If the weather is not warm, heat the wheel with a hairdryer first, to warm it up. Alloygators; made of tough nylon and slot between the alloy and the tyre. They are more expensive to buy, and need professional fitting. This adds more to the cost. But, they are more durable than other types and don’t depend on the adhesive to stay put. How to fit the rim protector will depend on the type you have. If they slot between the wheel and the tyre, like Alloygators, they will need professional fitting. This is because it is a complicated process, and the tyre needs deflating for the fitting to take place.

Tyre shine and silicone based lubrication products used by some tyre fitters can leave a silicone residue on the wheel which prevents bonding. Likewise some of the brake dust repellent wheel cleaners can also stop adhesion. These will require removing with our Tyre Shine Remover spray available in our web shop.The rim blades also weren’t attractive as lots of people say they fling off and weren’t strong enough to take the hit. Various motor architectures were analysed including Brushless DC (BLDC), Synchronous AC and Induction Motor technology. A BLDC configuration was soon ruled out (based on previous experience with rim drives) as the concentrated windings, cogging torque, and torque ripple effects were anticipated to cause motor starting and low-speed vibrational problems.

The aim of the FAST-Fan project is to explore the potential of rim driven technology in this context. The objectives were to research, analyse and develop the technology and to utilise the latest available rapid prototyping techniques to realise design concepts through the construction of a scaled prototype device suitable to power a small unmanned test aircraft. Rim drivenHowever, permanent magnet technology did seem to offer better torque generation than inductance motor designs. So, a high voltage AC synchronous motor design was developed. The FAST-fan motors are lightweight and incorporate minimal iron stators, aluminium windings and iron-less rotors. Multi-slotted distributed windings are used to minimise torque ripple and vibration. These are only subjected to relatively low currents, because of the higher supply voltage and lower rim force requirements. Which significantly reduces the resistive heating of the air-cooled windings and increases the attainable motor efficiency to above 93%. The resulting compact concept demonstrator design has a maximum power rating of 30 kW and provides an overall Specific Power of 2.5 kW/kg. Which includes the active (circuit) and non-active (structural) components such as the. pylon, intake, nozzle, nacelle, and fans etc. Performance and testing Our DIY bonded products use a high quality double sided tape called a VHB (very high bond). This tape bonds to the wheel surface using viscous flow. This means the maximum bond is not instant, but takes around 72 hours to fully cure, although useable bond strength is reached within 24 hours. (Rimfinity are pro install only and do not require adhesives). Leave to cure for at least 24 hours, it can take up to 72 hours before it is completely safe to drive.

The next bit is very important. Since the tapes are pressure activated, you need to go around the circumference pushing the product on with a firm pressure. A damp (not wet) cloth can assist in getting good pressure into the tape all the way round the wheel. Finish off with the joint cover cap if selected. We use a specialist 406 rubber joint bonding adhesive, so be careful not to bond your fingers together. The use of latex gloves is suggested when using the adhesive. The joint covers need to be held in place for about 1 minute until initial bond is achieved. We only use genuine 3M bonding products in our kits, which are the very best in the world and have been tested in the 3M UK laboratories for performance and longevity. At the heart of the FAST-Fan lies the energiser unit which transfers torque from the motors to the air via the fan blades. There is a finite rate at which energy can be transferred in this way, as governed by Euler’s Work Equation. The pressure rise across the fan is also important because it determines the achievable efflux velocity, which depends on the amount of energy (torque) that can be transferred per swept volume. The energiser unit is therefore optimised to deliver the required maximum amount of energy to the airflow, and the air is entrained in a duct of gradually decreasing volume to achieve the desired pressure rise over the dual fan stages. The closed fan-tips minimise pressure leakages and contra-rotation of the fans ensures that there is no energy lost in efflux swirl as the air flows through the nozzle to generate high-speed thrust. The relative rotor speeds can be independently modulated to control fan performance and in common with turbo-jet engines the FAST-Fan should benefit from ram-effect, especially whilst operating at high speeds and altitudes. Cooling-air enters from vents on the outer surface of the intake and is drawn over the motor windings by the motive flow of the exiting air. Use alcohol cleaning wipes to wipe any remaining residue from the edge of the wheels. Leave to dry for one minute. We use dry steam to totally clean and decontaminate the rim surface prior to fitting and heat to accelerate bonding time.
