But overall, this was a very enjoyable read for me, and I'd definitely recommend it, particularly if you enjoy YA with a full cast of fun characters, rather than something purely romance centered. It’s a book about figuring out who you are, and what you want to do with your life as a teenager because society expects you to do that. It challenged the “norm” and gave insight into the fact that not everyone’s life paths need to follow an identical formula. There’s cooking, working at a retirement community restaurant workers, coming out, college decisions, and childhood friends reunited to maybe something more? So, while it was annoyingly aggravating to see the lengths to which Tommy devised so many futile attempts to somehow lure Gabriel into believing that they were destined to be together - I believed it. Who hasn't done something inconceivable to try to have something done our way, or even have convince someone to act in a certain manner? 🥺 This was very high on my most anticipated releases of the year, and I was not disappointed. The story touched on a lot of difficult topics, but was really cohesive, and well structured. Whilst grief and loss were huge themes, they were subtle and didn't overshadow the story.

Each book can be read as a standalone but trust me you are going to want to read them all.The romance, well. It was as if I walked into my room after not cleaning it for two months. Usually I want the mains to end up together. Here, not necessarily. Did they end up together? Find out on your own–but I promise you're not gonna be disappointed with the outcome, no matter what you prefer. A lot of things in this book were messy; romance, relationships, life. It was so well-written, it felt completely natural. Because life in itself is a mess and Erik Brown knows how to encapsulate that fact.
