About this deal

Fat is very high in calories, so eating too many fatty foods, or eating them too often, can make you put on weight. Eating too much saturated fat can also increase the amount of cholesterol in your blood, which increases your chance of developing heart disease. Eggs that have not been produced under the Lion Code are considered less safe, and pregnant women are advised to avoid eating them raw or partially cooked, including in mousse, mayonnaise and soufflé. These eggs should be cooked until the white and the yolk are hard. It is a good guide for women at any life stage, not just pregnancy. It is especially helpful for women who are TTC, pregnant, or postpartum, but I think her nutrition information is valuable and applicable for any woman of childbearing age. However, this is not a book that I could in good conscience recommend to the average reader, and certainly not to pregnant friends, colleagues, or clients. The advice in this book is simply impractical for most of the clients I serve, and for most people I know. We live in a large metropolitan area, and while there is certainly access to farm fresh and organic food, because of the high cost of living in this area most of my clients -- and particularly those members of our underserved communities -- are unable to afford this diet on a regular basis.

Getting diagnosed with gestational diabetes is scary, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Imagine easily managing your blood sugar, effortlessly gaining the right amount of weight during your pregnancy, and giving birth to a beautiful, healthy baby. Nutrient-dense foods to “build a healthy baby” and which foods to avoid (including the latest evidence on fish and mercury, food safety and deli meat, etc.) She did mention several times throughout the book that even if you can't eat organic, pasture-raised etc. That it is still more important to eat nutrient dense food than to avoid because of toxicity concerns. I think she could have said that more, as many women I think would give up because they don't have access to or can't afford to eat completely clean.Sadly, if you follow conventional prenatal nutrition guidelines, you risk deficiencies in several of these nutrients. Most shellfish dwell at or near the bottom of the water bodies they live in, just like lobster, crab, grouper, flounder, etc. Gravity draws particulates down: dead matter, feces, human waste and trash. So, it's long been established that the lower strata of any water body has the highest concentration of environmental pollutants, even in the absence of a city to contaminate it. In a nutshell, the meat and other tissues of the species that dwell closer to the bottom have the highest density of toxins. Further, almost all of these species dwell in coastal areas, and thus have much greater exposure to urban pollutants such as automobile pollution and industrial runoff, sewage treatment facilities, etc. This is what we're consuming when we eat shellfish. This goes way beyond the importance of folate… there are so many amazing science nuggets in here! Even the most up-to-date pregnancy science nerds are guaranteed to learn something (i.e. the uterus contains up to 800% more collagen at the end of pregnancy…woah!). This book is unique in how beautifully it bridges the gap from academia to real-life implementation. I am not aware of a more complete compendium of practical knowledge on pregnancy nutrition, toxin protection, and overall well-being. I’d recommend this book to all women in their childbearing years (and their practitioners). Getting this knowledge out there will lead to more healthy and happy pregnancies, and more happy and healthy mamas and babies! Author presents herself as an impartial pursuer of truth who is just following the very best research wherever it may lead. Her bias is more apparent on social media, though, where she follows many accounts in the conspiracy-theory- and pseudoscience-laden echo chamber of alternative/antivax/“holistic”/“natural” health disinformation. Heat ready meals until they're steaming hot all the way through – this is especially important for meals containing poultry. Wash all surfaces and utensils, and your hands, after preparing raw foods (poultry, meat, eggs, fish, shellfish and raw vegetables) to help you avoid food poisoning. You also need to make sure that some foods, such as eggs, poultry, burgers, sausages and whole cuts of meat like lamb, beef and pork, are cooked very thoroughly until steaming all the way through. On the one hand, it is well-researched and includes a rich array of information for pregnant folks, their providers, and anyone with an interest in prenatal care. The more I read prenatal literature the more I note how rarely authors cite evidence to support their claims. I can commend Nichols on the breadth of her research and her meticulous use of citations. I learned a lot from this text. It has changed the way I eat and how I think about my nutrition for the better. Her chapters on nutrition, healthy foods, the fourth trimester, and meal plans supported me in making incremental changes in support of my baby’s development. I’m not saying that none of the recommendations have merit, but there are too many sloppy mistakes for me to take the overall message very seriously. My wife and I are so grateful for your work. And [we] are blessed immensely to learn these things (that many of us already hunched at) a few months out still from trying to get pregnant. All told, consuming shellfish has been my only outright disagreement so far as I read. Otherwise, this is an excellent piece of work. And I give honor to Lily, again, for swimming upstream.
