About this deal

Even though we ultimately know what happens to humankind, there are still plenty of moments of drama and tension in Brittle’s accounts of the world that was too. Now the world is controlled by One World Intelligences – vast mainframes that have assimilated the minds of millions of robots. Cheap labor undermined the capitalist model, destroying the need for a labor force and increasing the wealth disparity while simultaneously creating an entire class of people who substituted AI ownership for real work. If anything, my only criticism is that the robots sometimes were a little too much like people; other than obligatory concessions to mechanical physiology and computers for brains, they sometimes seemed to think in ways a human would but a robot shouldn't.

The OWIs (One World Intelligences) are out to gather up her and her kind, and will stop at nothing in their quest for complete domination over their fellow bots. One dissolved ownership in exchange for ensuring that all things had a purpose, no matter how menial. Clarke, for all his limitations when it came to style and character, always wanted to move SF speculation beyond the familiar, to think of new questions or new ways of asking old ones, and I don’t see how Sea of Rust does that. And here we were, our predecessors extinct, confronting our own challenges, pressing on into the future, fighting our own extinction.

There is a genuine debate about the value of genre and as I wrote recently about Ian Macdonald’s Luna: Wolf Moon, I’m very much in favour of reading core genre as part of a diverse approach to the SF field. I really enjoyed this one, I read it when it was shortlisted for the Clarke and I enjoyed the themes discussed in the book. I considered every film another day of classes and writing a review a home work assignment and it was graded by everyone who wrote nasty comments on the internet. But people found socialism to be the antithesis of progress while finding capitalism in its purest form too cruel. Structurally, Sea of Rust is a first-person story that frontloads a massive amount of context through a lot of blocky, unsubtle exposition – and if the worldbuilding thus conveyed was any good, I could happily roll with that. As the OWIs have seized the means of production, the robots who remain must trade, fight, and scavenge for parts to keep surviving.

Brittle is a deeply cynical lead who has convinced herself human life means nothing and her war with Mercer is two cowboy hats and an Italian film set away from being a riff so loud you can barely hear yourself read. The Western stylings play as cute, without self-awareness on the part of the characters, in a way they shouldn’t.
