The remains were found by a farmer ploughing a field in the hamlet of La Marvindière, near St Charles-de-Percy, in Normandy. The ground had not been disturbed since World War 2, when a pair of Sherman tanks, operated by soldiers of the Guards Armoured Division, were destroyed there on 4 August 1944. A Coldstream Guards cap badge was found close by. The French Revolutionary War (1793-1802) saw the 1st Battalion deploy to Holland in 1793 and fight at Lincelles (1793) and Tourcoing (1793), before returning home two years later.

This has been a fascinating and complex case to research and it is very rewarding to have seen a positive result for the families of Gdsm Bayliss and Gdsm Blyth. Gdsm Bayliss was a young man with an exciting future ahead of him. He was recently married and had just discovered he was to become a father. Gdsm Blyth had a wife and young son who grew up not knowing what had happened to his father and spent nearly 50 years searching for answers. The focus is often placed on the sacrifice made by soldiers such as Gdsm Bayliss and Gdsm Blyth, but this story also brings home the reality of life for those they left behind: young widows who struggled without their husbands, a daughter who would never meet her father and a son who only knew his father as an infant. I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to meet Gdsm Bayliss’ grandsons and wider family and Gdsm Blyth’s son, Peter, and to have been part of their stories. King Edward VII assumed the colonelcy-in-chief of the regiment on his accession, [42] and subsequent monarchs have also been colonel-in-chief. The battalion was posted to Derry, Northern Ireland, on a two-year deployment in 2001. It then deployed to Iraq in April 2005 for a six-month tour with the rest of 12th Mechanised Brigade, based in the south of the country. The battalion lost two of its soldiers, on 2 May, near Al Amarah and on 18 October at Basra. [13] In the early 1700s, the 1st Foot Guards had the Army’s most celebrated soldier, the Duke of Marlborough, as its colonel. Marlborough had started his military career in 1667 as an ensign in the regiment. They include such famous names as The Queen’s Royal Hussars, The Parachute Regiment, the Gurkhas and the Grenadier Guards. Anodised Aluminium badges were first introduced in 1948 when the Army Clothing Department asked manufacturers to produce badges from a new metal that would eliminate the need for polishing and would stay bright and clean all the time. An additional benefit for the army was that the new 'Staybright' badges were cheaper than the old brass versions. Few Kings crown Staybrite badges were made but by around 1953 the British Army began to use Staybright cap badges on large scale replacing the old metals versions. Anodised Aluminium consists of anodising which is an electro-plating process resulting in a lightweight shiny badge, this is used because it is cheap, flexible and does not require as much maintenance as brass badges. In 1941, 1st Battalion was converted to an armoured role and served with the Guards Armoured Division. It remained at home until July 1944, when it landed in Normandy. It was joined there by the newly raised 4th and 5th Battalions, both hostilities-only units that also served with the division. Weinreb, Ben; Hibbert, Christopher (1992). The London Encyclopaedia (reprinted.). Macmillan. p.409. When the Second World War began, the 1st and 2nd battalions of the Coldstream Guards were part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in France; [7] whilst the 3rd Battalion was on overseas service in the Middle East. Additional 4th and 5th battalions were also formed for the duration of the war. They fought extensively, as part of the Guards Armoured Division, in North Africa and Europe as dismounted infantry. The 4th battalion first became a motorized battalion in 1940 and then an armoured battalion in 1943. [11]

During the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-13), a detachment from the Coldstream Guards served during the Siege of Gibraltar (1704-05), before taking part in the capture of Barcelona (1705) and the defeat at Almanza (1707). Coldstreamers gave up their tanks at the end of the war, the new battalions were disbanded, and the troops distributed to the 1st and 2nd Guard Training Battalions. [7] We know that serving members and veterans of the Armed Forces wear their cap badges with great pride and to see the new ones on display on the international stage will be a special moment.” Guaranteed original.
