It is not recommended to split a DMX512 signal by “Y”ing an output into two inputs. This can cause termination and reflection problems. Any signal arriving at the Y point will be partially reflected and depending on the final termination resistances either there will be reflections from the cable ends or the steady state resistance seen by the controller will be incorrect. DMX512 has also expanded to uses in non-theatrical interior and architectural lighting, at scales ranging from strings of Christmas lights to electronic billboards and stadium or arena concerts. It can now be used to control almost anything, reflecting its popularity in all types of venues. Originally, DMX was intended to control brightness of lights, but nowadays, it controls many other devices and other parameters of lights.

Advanced Lighting Control

As the DMX signal moves through your lights, it loses signal strength over time. At some point, it will become too weak to be reliable. DDMX-512 supports a USITT standard DMX512 output protocol. The DDMX-512 output will easily drive a standard 120 ohm bus termination. A DMX512 network employs a multi-drop bus topology with nodes strung together in what is commonly called a daisy chain. A network consists of a single DMX512 controller – which is the master of the network — and one or more slave devices. For example, a lighting console is frequently employed as the controller for a network of slave devices such as dimmers, fog machines and intelligent lights.

There are two major types of controllers: a standalone unit and an insert card for consoles such as D-Show or Proshow Producer. A standalone is simpler because you do not have to resize your console, which can be time-consuming if you already created content with it before adding your new control surface. Insert cards are more expensive but allow access from any computer that has the software installed on it, making them easier to share between multiple users since they serve as just another input device alongside keyboard and mouse. The protocol is often referred to as DMX-512 as it can control up to 512 channels within a single system. Using a compatible decoder or DMX power supply can be daisy chained to other decoders.
