About this deal

The distillery uses a combination of sherry and ex-bourbon casks for its Deveron malts, and bottles at the watery anemic abhorrent standard minimum strength of 40% ABV. It should be known that Macduff distillery is no little artisan whisky-maker. It pumps out a mighty 2,400,000 litres of spirit a year, and uses two wash stills and three spirit stills, which is a rather unusual set-up. Equally as interesting, as Tom points out in his write-up of the distillery, there are upward-tilting condensers reaching out from the wash stills. (Pure whisky nerdism, but you don’t see it very often.) Nose: Vanilla. Blanched almonds (or marzipan), rosewater, nougat, and a faint cherry compote. Red delicious apple skins. The aroma is quite shy – the above all has to be coaxed out of the glass. A rest in the glass does not seem to alter anything. I’m just going to apologize in advance for this. Sometimes a week goes by in which one has managed to not consume an interesting, exciting, or controversial single malt to tell the world about. During such weeks, it’s my wont to dig into the “archives” (by which I mean my scrap bin) to drag out some scribbles on a malt that nobody cares about, and that everyone will continue not caring about once I’ve had my say. There was mention last year of a Deveron 25 year old but no sign of it yet. There’s no Deveron distillery. That’s the first thing you should know. There is a River Deveron, however, which is where the new whisky gets its name. Instead this new range, part of the Last Great Malt range, hails from Macduff distillery. To confuse matters even more, we should note that this The Deveron is not Glen Deveron whisky, either, although both originate from Macduff. And nor does any of this have anything to do with whisky blenders Macduff MacDuff International Limited(!) which is named after Stuart MacDuff. The distillery's official name In 1972, Macduff was acquired by William Lawson Distillers but official bottlings come mostly under the former. [2]

But, I really felt this should have been bottled at 43% ABV – and it’s not often I say that as I’m quite happy with the lower strength whiskies given enough time in the mouth. It wasn’t keen to share its identity with me. It’s like speaking to someone at a party, but they ask all the questions of you and you never get to know much about them. This whisky still feels like a stranger.

Macduff distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Macduff in the Highland whisky producing area of Scotland. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. In keeping with the Italian market’s love of young fresh malts, a five- and eight-year-old were early members of the range. Two years later, Martini merged with Bacardi and in 1995 Macduff became part of the Dewar’s stable.

Colour: amber. On the nose: quite fresh and fruity. Settles to fresh green apples and mead, with a little honey. Touches of Chardonnay and Sauternes. Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. Palate: Moderate body, almost but not quite syrupy. Barky, with a bunch of weirdly bitter cork notes, verging on fungal. Brown sugar, marzipan, maple sugar candies, thin pale malt. In 1972, Macduff was acquired by William Lawson Distillers Ltd. which became part of the Martini & Rossi corporation in 1980. [3] The Deveron is a line of single malts produced at the Macduff distillery in Speyside. The name “Macduff” appears on independent bottlings, while variations on “Deveron” are used for official releases. Why? I’m too apathetic about this malt to find out. Probably it doesn’t matter. At some point in the hazy last few years the owners of Macduff distillery (John Dewar & Co. which is in turn owned by Bacardi) rebranded the official line from “Glen Deveron” to “The Deveron” and relaunched a core range at ages 10, 12, 18, and mumblemumble. Why drop the “Glen”? Again, no idea. In 1992, Martini & Rossi were acquired by the Bacardi Corporation. Bacardi put their subsidiary John Dewar & Sons in charge of the Macduff distillery. [4] Even the most ardent whisky connoisseurs amongst you could be forgiven for not recognising The Deveron name as a single malt, as it differs from most other Scotch single malt whiskies in that it isn't named after the distillery it was produced in. The distillery had been slowly expanding in terms of production throughout its life and its Italian owner upped the number of stills to five in 1990. By then a range of single malts had been released, all under the name Glen Deveron. they are still currently available but Dewar's tell me that these will be phased out slowly and I would guess perhaps replaced by the same expressions but under the new The Deveron brand name.No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Each expression has been launched in selected markets around the world including Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, Sweden, Taiwan, United States and United Kingdom. In 1972, William Lawson Distillers acquired the distillery and eight years later they, in turn, were acquired by Martini Rossi. During William Lawson’s tenure, they established Macduff as a component of the William Lawson blend, a very popular Scotch whisky which sells in excess of fifteen million bottles yearly. Indeed, Macduff whisky has long since been used as a blending product. Despite this, Macduff is still bottled as a single malt, though sometimes under the name Glen Deveron.
