About this deal

The father, Barry, works in construction and has until recently been very close and affable with Daisy, exhibiting that easy father and daughter connection. I thought things were going to be cut and dry in terms of who committed the crime, but in the end, I wasn’t even close to being right about. As time passes, Fawley becomes convinced that he’s now leading a murder investigation, and it’s looking increasingly likely that one or other – or both – of Daisy’s parents knows more than they’re saying.

I really wish I love it, as I was looking forward to Cara Hunter's new novel, but now, I am not so sure anymore. Set in Oxford with the maze of the city’s streets very apparent – even more so in this case of a missing child, the case starts as one missing child case and then turns into quite something else. Naturally, any clues as to what happened to Daisy are probably hidden in the days and weeks before her disappearance. A whodunit but one that deals with some difficult issues that will have you guessing right up to the end. Adding to this disjointed feel are the fleeting attentions of a story which jumps between random elements meaning that much of what unfolds is merely given cursory attention.

Fawley has lost his own son, though the details remain sketchy, and along with his Superintendent, we find ourselves wondering if he’s the best person to lead this enquiry. Everything was wrapping up nicely and then the author said, let me throw a lil razzle dazzle in there even though no razzle nor dazzle was needed. The story begins with an interesting premise, and I loved the initial interviews that are happening, right after the disappearance. Don’t expect the dreaming spires and eccentric academics of Inspector Morse, though; the focus here is town rather than gown (there’s a nod to this when the detective inspector who narrates sections of the story tells us that he drives a normal car and doesn’t do crosswords). Instead it felt like being showered with cheap body glitter that somehow embeds itself in your flesh and impervious to soap.

As our crew pick their way through false starts and mistaken assumptions, they eventually get some lucky breaks and make some progress. The ending - it just wasn't worth the wait, and it was the most unsatisfying ending I have ever encountered in mystery novels. So as Close to Home opens, Hunter delivers a gut-punch that seems all-too-real: Daisy Mason has disappeared, and no-one seems to know how, or even when, it happened. This is a fast paced and well plotted story peppered with social media postings, news bulletins and police interviews. Detective Inspector Adam Fawley is the lead on the investigation, which is one of the book’s superlatives.

And Daisy’s family is certainly strange—her mother is obsessed with keeping up appearances, while her father is cold and defensive under questioning.

This in turn, results in anger and threats of violence, and it becomes even more imperative that DI Fawley and his team discover the whereabouts of Daisy. I have been wanting to try this series since this debut was released in March of 2018, because of the many 5 star reviews it has received, but I am not a fan of police procedurals, as a rule, nor of reading series, so it kept lingering in my large unread pile! The unusual format didn’t prove a hindrance to my overall enjoyment however but the Twitter commentary of trolls brings nothing to the party and as a reader who enjoys the escape from the vile social media slanging I have no desire to read pages of it in a crime fiction novel. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Existen muchos autores y libros sobre el género por conocer, y solo tengo una vida, por lo que me parece más importante descubrir diferentes prosas, que buscar en un segundo, tercer o cuarto libro de esta autora, lo que seguramente no encontraré.

Extreme suspension of disbelief is required to believe Daisy and her group of friends are just eight-years-old from their emotional articulacy to the complicated friendship dynamics of a group who should surely be more concerned with playground games. Daisy’s ten-year-old brother seems like he knows something, but he’s just as secretive and odd as the parents. As well as looking at the crime itself, Hunter examines the public reaction, and the outside perception of the investigation. With a story that feels all too real, Close to Home is the best kind of suspense—the kind that sends chills down your spine and keeps you up late at night, thrilled and terrified.Por otra parte, los mensajes de Twitter y otras redes sociales sobre cómo la comunidad va siguiendo la investigación y se involucra en el caso de la desaparición de Daisy, le da un sentido de urgencia muy bien logrado. The mixed media in this is nothing like I've read before and it really made it a stand out for me - there are interview transcripts, tweets, media articles, letters and all in differing texts and styles and that is a win! I certainly found him credible and what we do learn of his home life and his relationship with his wife and their lost child is sensitively written. DI Fawley works against the clock to find any trace of the little girl, but it's as if she disappeared into thin air--no one saw anything; no one knows anything.
