I haven't actually ever watched Downton Abbey, but I have interest in the era and I like cookbooks, so I thought I'd check this out. for the hardback edition, this would be a fun gift for any fan of the show and/or food history buff in your life. This later evolved into a dish that contained smoked fish and became a staple in upper class Victorian and Edwardian breakfast buffets. Annie Gray describes this work as, “a glorious collection of Victorian flavors for both water- and cream-based ices, the variety of which puts most modern ice cream books to shame.

With this alluring and vibrant cookbook, fans of the PBS series and anglophiles alike can stage every stylish element of this cultural staple of British society at home. This charming cookbook also features a detailed narrative history and extols the proper decorum for teatime service, from tea gowns and tearooms to preparing and serving tea. The Official Downton Abbey Cookbook presents over 100 recipes that showcase the cookery of the Crawley household - from upstairs dinner party centrepieces to downstairs puddings and pies - and bring an authentic slice of Downton Abbey to modern kitchens and Downton fans. The measurements and much of the terminology is American although British modern equivalents are quoted, seemingly grudgingly.

Even if you did not have the skills to cook some of the more exotic meals you believe they ate in the Downton period, this book clearly lays the ingredients out boldly and clearly, with nowhere near as many items in each recipe that I thought it might include, which makes it so much easier to follow.
