HP’s Elite Dragonfly Max, which is not at all an eco-branded laptop, also has a 50 percent PCR keyboard with bezels that are 45 percent PCR, and some of the Dragonfly line have had chassis that are 90 percent recycled. If you want a laptop to last for years – so you can avoid electronic waste – the Acer doesn’t inspire huge amounts of confidence. It may be the last hurrah of the Tiger Lake line before Intel releases its 12th gen chips and tries to claw back some of the ground it has recently lost to AMD’s Ryzen processors. While there’s likely a small group of people who don’t want a GPU but do want the power of the 1195G7, the mediocre battery life isn’t a sacrifice I’d recommend that most people make. Both machines remain similar outside of their processors, with the same 16GB of memory, dual-band 802. My review machine has an international keyboard and a 512GB SSD but is otherwise the same as a UK-spec i7 model.Acer’s environmentally friendly approach extends even to the packaging, 85% of which is made up of recycled paper. It’s not just about the laptop, either: the box uses 85% recycled paper, and the plastic in the packaging is 100% recycled. If you care a lot about the environmental impact of your laptop, you shouldn’t be adding up the recycled plastic inside of it. The display may not be stellar and the webcam positioning is a farce but it’s still a well-made and handsome device that offers good value for money.

The Aspire Vero didn't lead the way in our test group, but it showed decent stamina and should get you through a full day of work or school. This could explain why, despite the identical storage capacity, the VAIO SX14 outperforms it thanks to its PCI Express Gen 4 SSD, which allows for higher transfer speeds. The Aspire Vero pushes itself over the 5,000-point threshold, as do most of the other machines on the list. Its looks will divide opinion, and this certainly isn’t the only environmentally conscious laptop on the shelves.

The Acer Aspire Vero does not have a deep dish meaty keyboard, or one of those contentious ultra-shallow ones. Steps are taken to reduce our carbon footprint by recycling and reusing the scrap material generated during production and using 100% recyclable packaging. The chassis and screen bezel use 30% recycled hardware, and the screen and keycaps use 99% and 50% recycled material respectively. I’m pretty much a touch typist so don’t glance at the keys with any great frequency, but I still find it distracting.
