About this deal

The odd reference to Poland Street and britpop can't cover the fact that this book doesn't bring 1990s Soho to life, which is a shame. p>Read about how we’ll protect and use your data in our Privacy Notice. For example, the main character owns a struggling snooker club, and he keeps a cue under the bar in case there’s any trouble.

What’s also fun is the casual name-drop of the author into the conversation of two sarcastic snooker players, which produces an unnerving effect not unlike when a real city is referred to in Kafka. That style is replicated here in the first of a trilogy following cheeky snooker club owner Frankie James; with gangsters, police, family and murder. Be advised though that there is a lot of bad language, but for me this made the story more gritty and real. Didn't know what to expect from this book , but was very pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. His frank memoir, which reads like a transcript from the psychiatrist's coach, explains that running - and the running community - gave him a sense of acceptance and achievement.

Although it does flirt with it from time to time, the book on the whole avoids the nostalgic sentimentality that surrounds accounts of the Krays and the Richardsons, although its relationship with the underworld is complicated. But in this gangster underworld of drugs, violence and murder will Frankie be tough enough to get the truth, set his brother free and get out alive?I don't know if Ronnie is planning a sequel or maybe even a series of this book but if he ever does do a follow up I look forward to reading it. Extraneous characters are dropped and a strong narrative drive pushes this crime thriller through a strong finale. It wasn’t great and it’s definitely not high literature, but it set out to do a job and succeeded at it.
