The handwritten text is harder to follow; I’d recommend treating them as poems and re-reading the book to grasp the intensity of the stories told. For Alexa and I, doing this book of fairy tales was almost the most accurate reflection of the world around us today. Here, their subversive folk tales are brought to vivid life via handwritten stories the pair worked on together, alongside illustrations by artist Evita Flores and art director Sandra Leko’s gloriously whimsical pastel pink layouts. It helped too that there was an instant artistic synergy between the pair from their very first day on set together.That heritage has always played a part in Collins’s photography—right down to shooting a Gucci campaign back in her grandmother’s Budapest living room. Now more than a year later, the fruits of their labor are being released in a lavishly illustrated, 152-page hardbound book, Fairy Tales, out next week from Rizzoli.
