Once you had a electric toothbrush you soon will know how long to brush your teeth and when to change the brush head. Unlike the vast majority of iO Series brushes that track 6 zones, the iO Series 9 (and the iO10) have 16 zone tracking. You’re still getting a built-in OLED display, albeit in monochrome rather than colour, along with the iO Series’ advanced brush head and smooth, power-efficient magnetic motor. Not only do you see where you are brushing, but you also see which cleaning mode is selected and how long you have been brushing for. Using the iO7 is a slightly more enjoyable experience as the motor produces a less mechanical and intense sound.
You can for example brush just the outside tooth surface in a zone and the app will pretty much suggest good coverage, which isn’t strictly true. This comes into play then you move the brush to the back of your mouth, the tapered brush head forces you to open wider, and this can lead to foam escaping and making a bit of a mess. While the Oral-B iO is a fine toothbrush, it did not live up to the hype nor the expense in our opinion. This allows data to be transferred from the brush handle to an Oral-B app on your smartphone, which provides visual insights into how you are brushing. When I connected for the first time, it gave me a little snowflake screen splash showing me that I was connecting an iO!The brush is light and easy to hold, however, the brush head is noticeably larger than the standard brush heads and cut at an angle, so it does not stand up on its own.

It may seem a little childish, but earning praise form your toothbrush is surprisingly motivating, and if you've been warned that heavy brushing is putting your gums and tooth enamel at risk, it could be just the nudge you need to alter your habits. At times it can think I am brushing the upper rear teeth when I am brushing the lower rear, impacting the coverage and on-screen visuals. The differences are in the accessories, with a simple plastic case that simply keeps the brush clean, but doesn't charge it, and a standard charging base rather than a sleek magnetic puck for your bathroom. It has benefits (more on those below) and offers at a glance feedback without a smartphone, but the app provides more meaningful data.
Dentists recommend replacing your brush head every 3 months or sooner if it becomes worn for an optimal clean. It takes Oral-B's iO Gentle Care and Ultimate Clean brush heads, which have densely packed bristles that fit around the curvature of each tooth. Once that's done, cycle through the various brushing modes with the button below the display, select one with the button above it, and you're ready to begin.
The brush cleans well, but it isn’t clearly ahead of the other Oral-B brushes we tested, and it isn’t as good as the Sonicares. But when you go from electric brushing to iO it goes beyond the ordinary to become a truly extraordinary experience that you will see, hear and feel differently. But, if you have a small mouth or crowded teeth maneuvering the iO head around will feel a bit different and in a few instances pose more of a challenge. It doesn't matter if you end up taking longer than the typical two minutes to complete a thorough clean, but you'll lose points for not completing every part of your mouth, rushing, or applying excessive pressure.
