I love this story, and the way it combines the bitter of adolescence with the sweet of friendship and family. Darius’s story also captures what it can feel like to be biracial and a child of an immigrant, split between the world you know and the world that your family comes from — the one you want to know better. Writing a sequel to a beloved, special book is a frightening and difficult task but Adib pulled it off.But when Darius gets to the Rezaeis’ house, Sohrab and his family members are distraught—Sohrab’s dad was killed in prison. While still filled with warmth and humor, Darius the Great Deserves Better has a sharper edge than Darius the Great Is Not Okay, with more mature storylines about teen sex, homophobia, "toxic masculinity" in sports, and a transgender family member. I enjoyed book one because of its focus on depression, family, friends, and personal growth, and I’m really happy that all of those didn’t take a backseat in this sequel. Over the next week, Sohrab joins Darius’s family to visit Dowlatabad, a palace and gardens, and invites Darius to play soccer again with Ali-Reza and Hossein.
