About this deal

I had high hopes that this book, a minor work of non-fiction from a novelist who, to some extent, steps aside from his field, would be right up my alley. Each word, in my most humble but assertive opinion, was a stroke, which upon putting them all together reveals this brilliant and elegant masterpiece. I know this blog won’t do justice to the insight gained from walking through London’s history but it has developed my ability to empathise with the historical context Dickens wrote in during the Victorian times. The day time, at the strand and its theatres, is relatively quiet, however, as dickens refers to the period that is ‘The restlessness of a great city, and the way in which it tumbles and tosses before it can get to sleep, formed one of the first entertainments offered to the contemplation of us houseless people’. Displaying all the finesse and sharp observation of character he is known for in his fiction works, this truly shows Victorian London through his eyes and how the populace suffered in the burgeoning city.

En tat aldılarım, "Night Walks", "Gone Astray", "Wapping Workhouse" ve "A Small Star in the East" idi. A collection of Dickens' early short stories based on his famous night walks, some of which span a distance of 20-30 miles in a single walk. But the river had an awful look, the buildings on the banks were muffled in black shrouds, and the reflected lights seemed to originate deep in the water, as if the spectres of suicides were holding them to show where they went down. Trafalgar square and Covent garden to the north west and the Old Bailey, Bank station and billingsgate market to the north east. Bunların genelinde Dickens'ın romanlarında da sık sık yer verdiği, dönemin İngilteresinin geliri oldukça düşük olan ve zor şartlar altında yaşamaya çalışan kişilerin hayatlarının aktarıldığını söylemek mümkün.

His last words were: "On the ground", in response to his sister-in-law Georgina's request that he lie down. Om Virginia Woolf beskriver psykologiska processer i Street Haunting har vi här urbansociologi värdigt en Hogarthtavla. True realism given via vivid descriptions while Charles was strolling around the city, combined with some socioeconomic comments of how life "ought to be" instead. His 1859 novel, A Tale of Two Cities, set in London and Paris, is his best-known work of historical fiction. Essays charting Dickens's experiences walking through the city of London - recording characters, observing industry, noting hypocrisies and humorous scenes as he passes through.

Dickens was always interested in social reform and his walks tend to take him to the seedier parts of the capital.
