About this deal

Additionally, Arrow is offering another really handsomely packaged release with quite a bit of non disc swag. On April 9th, the studio will release Richard III (Laurence Olivier, 1955), Gate of Hell (Teinosuke Kinugasa, 1953), and Naked Lunch (David Cronenberg, 1991).

The picture is well detailed with sublime colouring, really intensifying the heat, with a gorgeous black level and strong highlights in the white scale. Naked Lunch was shot on 35mm film using Panavision cameras and for this release has had a new 4K restoration from the original camera negative overseen by director of photography Peter Suschitzky and approved by director David Cronenberg, from which this UHD is sourced. The drugs depicted are all fictional, ranging from the almost-realistic to the completely outrageous, and this allows Cronenberg to refocus his attention on how Naked Lunch uses addiction as a metaphor. Burroughs's hallucinatory, once-thought unfilmable novel NAKED LUNCH, directed by David Cronenberg (VIDEODROME), a part-time exterminator and full-time drug addict named Bill Lee (ROBOCOP's Peter Weller) plunges into the nightmarish Interzone, a netherworld of sinister cabals and giant talking bugs. Responding to those who accused him of “heterosexualising” Naked Lunch, Cronenberg pointed out that Burroughs himself was uncertain about his sexuality at the time of writing, that he claimed in letters to friends that the book’s explicit gay sex had somehow vented that part of his personality.

Peter Boretski provides the voices for all the creatures, his voice emanating from pulsating insect anuses or dripping from the lips of spunk-soaked mugwumps. Ably supported by the likes of Judy Davis, Ian Holm, Julian Sands, and Roy Scheider, each giving a performance that is equally as obtuse and confusing as the narrative, but being completely in keeping with the whole. Instead of trying to get her off the powder, Bill decides to experiment with it and see if it is as good as Joan claims. So while there is able support from Ian Holm, Julian Sands and Roy Scheider, the success of Cronenberg’s brilliantly unusual screenplay pretty much hinges on the central performance and it’s a doozy.David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch is about a bizarre journey that begins and ends in the mind of a man people who have not experimented with drugs will likely never understand. The first Gulf War prevented shooting in Morocco, so they built sets in Toronto to stand in as North Africa. As a film it is actually quite difficult to like, per se, but there is no denying the raw power and verve with which it weaves its narrative; perhaps one to endure rather than enjoy. The interviews range from fifteen minutes to an hour plus, including a full 60 minutes with Peter Weller. I was unfamiliar with Burrough's body of work, so this commentary was very helpful to me in understanding the source material.

What mattered is that a novel primarily famous for being supposedly obscene and unreadable was given a lavish film adaptation. The first is with Cronenberg, who proves as eloquent, insightful and analytical about his own work as ever. Weaving together elements of Burroughs’ own remarkable biography with the content of the book, Cronenberg's film steps inside the body and mind of an author to depict the dangerous act of imagination itself from the inside out. Is it really going to end with Bill Lee finding his artistic voice and being honest about his sexuality?
