Battery life varies significantly based on device configuration, usage, network and feature configuration, signal strength, settings and other factors. As you’d expect, it handles complex image edits with Affinity Photo 2 with aplomb and ran silently most of the time, with the fans audible only when plugged into a Thunderbolt dock with an external monitor or when running intensive benchmark tests. Many of Microsoft’s own apps have been recompiled for ARM, such as the Edge web browser or Microsoft Teams. That said, the Surface Pro 9 is certainly the best the Surface has ever been, especially if you need a tablet that can replace a laptop without a hiccup.
Both the Dell XPS 13 and Surface Laptop 5 last longer by a couple of hours, while the HP Envy x360 13 and Acer Swift 3 are a couple of hours back.
It isn’t quite a revolution for repair the way the Framework Laptop may be, but it is still a big step in the right direction for Microsoft. The ports are really the only other noticeable change to the Surface Pro’s exterior chassis, and this time around, it’s not good news. The integrated Kickstand lets you set up wherever's most comfortable, with two 1080p cameras making video conferencing a cinch.
They are modern, well made and come in a range of nice colours, with Microsoft’s excellent kickstand out the back for propping the tablet up at a wide range of angles.View image in fullscreen A full charge takes about 100 minutes, hitting 80% in an hour using the included 65W charger via the Surface Connect port or equivalent USB-C power adaptor. The Intel model also charged faster with the included 65W Surface Connector, reaching 60 percent in just over 51 minutes. The Intel Pro’s camera is still perfectly fine, delivering an accurate and detailed picture, but it doesn’t have quite the same video conferencing experience.
The keyboard and touchpad are both fantastic, and I still appreciate the feeling of the Alcantara fabric under my palms. Laptops like the Dell XPS 13, HP Envy x360 13, and MacBook Air are a better overall value – but they can’t function as tablets like the Surface Pro 9. RAM (Random Access Memory) is different to the permanent storage provided by hard disk drives (HDD), solid-state drives (SSD) or memory cards in your equipment. Speaking of video conferencing, both Pro 9 units have surprisingly capable speakers, with audible bass and strong percussion. At this time, Surface Pro 9 (SQ3/5G) with Windows 11 Home on ARM will not install some games and CAD software, and some third-party drivers or anti-virus software.
