This was everything; it had the perfect combination of romance, plot, steam, worldbuilding, and intrigue. There is a bit of danger and dissension, lots of spice and cuteness and sweetness, some humor that made me laugh out loud, and a really cool setting in the castle in the Shadow World. The plot IS their relationship, with some focus on the politics and the conflict between Hunters and Shades. And although these two really needed to work on their communication skills, the author did it in such a way that I was simply amused, waiting for them to get their act together.

It gave this rather sweet love story some tension and angst at the beginning drawing out the will they/won't they.Really good balanced writing - what could have been rife with overtures was instead presented in a tempered way with regards to her POV. The only part I personally don't care for is the modern dialect of the heroine, but that is purely personal taste. I craved the monster to be a little more monster-y, and I wanted to know so much more about the history of these seemingly polar opposites.

My only real issue with her was that, I feel like she gained the respect the Shades way too easily, without really working toward it or deserving it. Their relationship was really intense right from the start, they had a nice chemistry and the tension was there. Her character almost felt like a real life romance reader had been transported into a book, so she made the best of it. I definitely got weird looks from coworkers because this book had me laughing a little too loud at some points. There are some misunderstandings, and drama surrounding the peace treaty, but there’s also a sweet HFN ending that’s making me crave more of this series. She even made the grave sin of committing some X-rated monster thoughts to paper—which in hindsight may not have been the best idea because her parents were mortified—but you live and learn. It was easy to read, our monsters here are your typical kind though distrustful type of fantastical race. Shades are otherworldly beings from the Shadow Realm that portal to the human world to feed off fear.
