About this deal

A crime novel, domestic in its nature and deadly in its outcome, The Only Suspect has me salivating for more novels written by Louise Candlish, she has a skill that isn’t easily replicated.

Add in some obsession and some behaviour that strikes distinctly off notes and which deepens the enigmatic puzzle. A thick set, intense man that brokers no disagreement to what could happen to you if you interfere in his personal life. For some strange reason this site has Alex completely on edge and very scared of what might be unearthed. The periods set in the past felt authentic and many a scene made me smile, reminiscing over times past and the dodgy music of my youth. It’s clear from the off that there are some dark deeds undertaken in this story, the extent of which are gradually revealed, but just when you think you have a handle on everything, when you think that Louise Candlish cannot catch you out again, she quite probably will.Surprising, intoxicating, elliptical and vexing, The Only Suspect is a five star read from Louise Candlish. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Whilst the key action and the really dynamic and jeopardy laden parts of the story take place in the past, the chapter set in the present are important too.

Het verhaal begint eigenlijk meteen al met de mededeling dat er iets aan deze bosjes wordt gedaan en je leest dat Alex dit absoluut niet ziet zitten. From the bestselling author of The Disappearance of Emily Marr comes this beautifully written novel about letting go of the love of your life (formerly published as Prickly Heat ).

I loved the flow of the writing, the way in which the author drew me in and kept me hooked, and the wondrous array of characters, endearing, irritating of nefarious as they all were. I certainly held a healthy amount of scepticism towards some of them, having the benefit of detachment to view all that was happening objectively which those who were in the heart of the story naturally wouldn’t. This is excellent storytelling, it’s full of unpredictability and is a clever slow burner of a psychological thriller. It’s psychological fiction or domestic noir with a deliciously surprising turn – just how I like it.Louise Candlish serves it with a helping of beautiful prose that hints at the threatening nature of its conclusion and other times hits you full on with the force of a guillotine. Black skies would have made a more fitting backdrop, some monstrous winter storm that tore the house from its foundations, but as it transpired the moment he'd been dreading for twenty-five years came on a still, gentle morning in May.

Back in 1995, Rick Ward was working in London as an auditor when he met Marina and fell head over heels. In the present day Alex’s unease is almost palpable and some of his actions raise an eyebrow as they are so questionable. That's until Beth announces the creation of a nature trail on a local site that's been disused for decades and suddenly Alex is a changed man.I am the bestselling author of 16 novels - a fact I can't quite believe myself - and my books are published all over the world. Told over 2 timelines with 2 different POV’s the present follows Alex and the 1990’s where we are introduced to Rick. Eventually, she revealed that she was married to a controlling man, Drew Stanley, and their luxury home in Silver Vale was virtually her prison. A couple of threads didn’t quite resolve enough for me, but I suspect it would have been too neat if everything had been perfectly wound up. I think that I will be in the minority with this review as other readers seemed to enjoy it much more than me.
