About this deal

There is something about the alluring world of elves, dwarves and old magic which has proved exceptionally popular, working on the imagination both as an enthralling adventure story and, at a deeper level, as ’a comprehensive counter-myth to the story of the 20th century’ (Independent). The text itself is taken from the corrected editions that Hammond and Scull assisted Christopher Tolkien in completing in 2004 (you can tell if you have a pre-2004 version if, in ‘A Conspiracy Unmasked’, Merry says that Buckleberry Ferry is twenty miles away. Now, the new hardback editions of these beautifully illustrated works have been collected together into one boxed set of four books. We wish we could see all 57 openers for ourselves, but we’ll have to content ourselves with imaging the magic for now. Even if you are a fledgling Tolkien fan like me, the book is easy to read and the concepts accessible.

Lee’s original illustrations have been reproduced to the artist’s exacting standards, in a scale and quality never seen before, and have been augmented by several entirely new images, including enchanting endpapers depicting the One Ring long before it came into Frodo’s possession, three frontispieces, two revised versions of existing illustrations, a new image titled ‘The Grey Havens’ and an exclusive giclée print. But this limited-edition set of magnificently illustrated LOTR books feels like it could give even The One Ring a run for its money.

Tolkien’s own artwork, created as he wrote the original text, now bound in exquisite genuine leather. New Reset Edition, with coloured frontispieces, full-page coloured illustrations in the text, smaller line drawings, and endpaper maps in red and black; red cloth, upper boards blocked in gilt with 'JRRT' monogram, gilt backs, a fine copy in publisher's illustrated board slip-case.

So this new edition featuring so many examples of the author's art was a no-brainer, almost a must-have.Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook). The front shows a very busy image of the battle which includes a lot of the Rohirrim, but I can’t pick out any of our main characters. The groundbreaking debut novel of Hugo Award-winning author Becky Chambers, one of the most imaginative voices in contemporary science fiction, is a truly galactic limited edition. I will be reading this edition when I do my annual reread of The Lord of the Rings in December, though I have a feeling I will not allow myself to have my usual cup of tea at my elbow when I have this particular book in hand. R. Tolkien (1892–1973) was a distinguished academic, though he is best known for writing The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, plus other stories and essays.

This means, of course, that the illustrations are smaller than I would like, particularly given the amount of detail Tolkien puts into many of them. There’s next to no colour on these covers except a green hue around Shelob and a red light in the tower of Cirith Ungol. The strength of Tolkien’s work is in its fidelity to its roots, which lie in the legends of the Nordic world. Produced in 1991 to promote the reissue of Tolkien under Harper Collins during the 'Tolkien Centenary' in 1992. NOT SIGNED --GUARANTEED to be AVAILABLE/// ---sizes are approximate (generally within 1/8 inch)--- Size: 7.To mark Folio’s 75th anniversary, Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story is published as a magical new edition, beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Marie-Alice Harel and bursting with exquisite design details. Readers will be able to follow the complete story of the Hobbits and their part in the quest for the Ring - beginning with Bilbo's fateful visit from Gandalf and culminating in the dramatic climax between Frodo and Gollum atop Mount Doom - while also enjoying over seventy full-page colour paintings and numerous illustrations which accompany this epic tale. The majestic scale of the landscapes and the atmosphere he captures on the page – all in exquisite watercolour and pencil – make him the only choice to illustrate this, the ultimate edition of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien had seen her sketches and was so impressed that his executors gave special permission for Fraser to interpret them for these Folio editions. Last spring or so, I found out that a new edition of The Lord of the Rings was coming out and that it would include illustrations by Tolkien himself, who in addition to being a philologist, Oxford don, husband, and father, was also a wonderful illustrator.
