About this deal

However, my appetite is severely whetted now; I just hope there are moves afoot to source and rescue the rest of the Laurel and Hardy output.

The entire presentation — including the restorations, commentary tracks, and gallery presentations are just awesome to behold. Some people have complained about the image quality of the BluRay, but believe me, you see just about what is there in the film prints, and in some cases it is a big improvement. While Randy’s ‘Laurel and Hardy: The Magic Behind the Movies’ has over 1,000 rare photographs therein, I’m really pleased to note that many more appear in this release, being accompanied by many from the collection of historian Richard W Bann. He has been published in The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Sun-Times, Printer's Row Journal, Los Angeles Times, Movieline and Entertainment Weekly. That’s That’ – a gag reel of bloopers and out-takes, compiled by Hal Roach Studios editor Bert Jordan, to celebrate Stan’s 47th birthday. With an abundance of passionate, informative commentary tracks and solid, if uneven, transfers, this set is a must-own for even casual fans of Laurel and Hardy. Five years ago, though, a 16 mm reference print struck in 1956 was discovered in a private collection, and just in time, too. Until you listen and watch the restorations on your 4k UHD television with your region-free blu-ray player, and your Yamaha 109 soundbar at correct settings, you don't know what you're missing! There are other reviews that will go into the minutiae of which restoration is the best, which one isn’t so good, which one isn’t pin sharp, has too much contrast, isn’t light enough etc etc.

Being that it’s from a various lower quality sources, there’s lots of damage and flicker leftover, yet it retains an organic appearance. We previously used to have some sections where we listed movies by the year they were released, which you can still look through: 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2011-14, 2006-10, before 2006. Two features and 17 shorts, including the legendary pie-fight silent film "The Battle of the Century," making it's video debut and nearly complete for the first time in over 90 years! Featuring an expansive assortment of DVDs and Blu-rays, there’s never been a better moment to brush up on some of cinema’s most prominent influencers. Independently owned and operated publications like Slant have been hit hard in recent years, but we’re committed to keeping our content free and accessible—meaning no paywalls or fees.

It’s in these shots where Laurel’s expressive eyebrows and his signature ambiguous smile conveyed the amiable naïveté and sensitivity that quickly came to define him. Pretty much everything here is given a commentary track by a couple of Laurel and Hardy historians (always one at a time, never together) – Randy Skretvedt and Richard Bann. Without a doubt their most famous flick and the recipient of the first-ever Oscar for short film, this one is a hoot.
