If I had to guess, this would be from the days he couldn’t afford to do that, or wasn’t yet at that stage, and that explains the roughness we see. That’s not to say this is a bad collection, but Ito has such wonderfully scary other pieces that many in this volume fell flat for me.

Oshima hates Furukawa because they had deserted the military together; Furukawa escaped, while Oshima was caught and punished. Scripted Love’ I thought was excellent – it’s about a sleazy man who records a video of himself to ‘console’ his ex-girlfriend, only for this to backfire when she prefers the scripted version to the real thing.The images of the dream self doing this are visceral, imaginative, and downright amazing, making this a particularly creepy story.
