About this deal

If you are an Alice Cooper fan or a fan of the Hollywood Vampires you CANNOT go wrong with this set. For in an age of over indulgence on every level, it was indeed "The best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, (well, maybe not that bit) it was the age of foolishness.

In 2015, the HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES not only released their first album, but also played one of their biggest concerts, which will now be released as their first live album. That year also saw the band play at Rock In Rio to over 100,000 people, which was recorded and has now been mixed ready for release on June 2. The Doors classic pairing of Five To One and Break On Through is given a working over next and is handled exceptionally well considering the original was more laboured and deliberate. My instinct might be to say that this part goes too long or the intro goes too long, but that's what makes it interesting. The cool thing about it is that it doesn’t sound like an Alice album, it doesn't sound like an AEROSMITH album: It sounds like a HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES album.Rock in Rio is not only one of the most well-known music festivals, but also the origin of Hollywood Vampires' first live Album. If Cooper doesn’t nail this next track then the band should get off-stage because that song is one of his own, School’s Out. Even somewhat rarer songs like Spirit‘s “I Got A Line On You” (a song I used to play when I was a drummer for a cover band in Youngstown, Ohio in the early 1990s) will educate younger listeners on some of the other musical tastes while keeping a hard rock flavor to it, along with “7 and 7 Is,” a song I was not familiar with at all until I heard and saw this package.

A John Lennon tune, Cold Turkey, is up next, and you can almost feel the band grow in confidence as the set gets under way. Not many people would even dare to cover Jimi Hendrix, especially at such a large gathering, but the fact the Hollywood Vampires not only had the courage to at such an early stage of their career but also nailed the absolute bejeesus out of it is impressive. You've got three alpha males who are used to running the show, and all of a sudden, three guys are sitting there with zero arguments. I too have always loved T Rex and was fortunate to see them (well him, mostly) in Newcastle in 1973. There are however, in the spirit of the VAMPIRES' original mission, three covers of songs originally written and recorded by legendary rockers who died far too young. Perry brings his guitar to life effortlessly, coming as close as anyone could ever get to replicating the feel and tone of the legendary Jimmy Page. I would guess at that point it was still just a bit of fun rather than a serious prospect going forward.

Opening with Raise The Dead, the second song on their debut album that was released only weeks before this show, and an ominous voiceover introducing the devilish delights of the Hollywood Vampires, Coopers distinctive voice rings through the murkiness and the band launch into action. I'm not really a fan of the Vampires (even though I like everyone involved in the project) so I'm surprised that I like this album as much as I do. There are also great versions of Cooper’s ‘School’s Out’ which, as in the studio, interpolates ‘Another Brick In The Wall’ as well as ‘Billion Dollar Babies’ and Aerosmith’s take (but heavier) on the classic ‘Train Kept a-Rollin’’ leading to the closing genius interpretation of ‘Brown Sugar. That songs like ‘Cold Turkey’, ‘Whole Lotta Love’ and ‘Brown Sugar’ belong to the timeless classics is well known and also on this release the sound of those stunning moments in rock enchant the listener. The journey started with the self-titled debut album in 2015, which was filled with cover versions of hits from the rocking 70’s.

Maybe it's just all in the eye (ear) of the beholder, or maybe I've just watched too many Tina S videos. Special guests include Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Andreas Kisser (Sepultura) and Zak Starkey (The Who/Oasis). Rocking, driving, and full of energy, "I Got A Line On You" seems revitalized and bristles with power.Lzzy Hale‘s guest appearance on “Whole Lotta Love” shows not only her powerful vocals but why she is one of the leaders of the female hard rock movements. Cold Turkey" is a song that I have never liked and the boys even manage to make that one pretty good. Jeepster from T-Rex takes centre stage, with Cooper rising to the occasion once more as he changes his vocal pitch to emulate the style employed by Marc Bolan while still retaining his own vocal richness. Rock in Rio' is not only one of the most famous festivals, but also the origin of the Hollywood Vampires' first live album.
